      Hi.

Apologies if this has already been asked and explained, but I tried searching the forums and couldn't find this particular question.

I have found that if I boot up Emulation Station without an Ethernet cable plugged in then I encounter an interruption straight after my boot video is finished - it displays a terminal screen which is carrying out some tasks (I assume network related) - and then it will go back to the 'Emulation Station' loading screen and boot as normal. If I boot with the Ethernet cable plugged in then it is a smooth transition from boot video ending straight into the 'Emulation Station' loading screen.

I assume this is related to setting up a network connection on boot, and I have not attempted to set up the WiFi in ES to see if this resolves it (I only ever use Ethernet anyway), but I wondered if there was a way to turn this off, maybe disable the WiFi in config.txt (if thats possible?). Its only a minor annoyance really, but it ruins my lovely boot video transition! ;)

      p.s. I am running RetroPie v4 RC1 on a Pi3.

      Cheers.

        Smlthers,

Did you modified FSTAB? I guess you are mounting a NAS in FSTAB, maybe, when you start you PI without Ethernet, NAS is not founded by PI throwing an error that you can't see because splash screen don't let you.

        Get lucky!

Can't check exactly where but there is an option (I think in raspi-config) for turning off dhcp discovery. As you guessed, the Pi pauses because it tries to establish a network connection before continuing. It's trying to establish Ethernet; it won't blindly try to join wifi networks, but it will blindly try to connect to anything shoved in its Ethernet port (even if that's "air").

EDIT: raspi-config, look for "wait for network at boot".

@bazmonkey - turning off 'Wait for network at boot' has solved the problem, and also sped up my boot time - thanks! :)

@Russelkm - Thanks for your input also.

            Cheers all.
