      Hi guys,

this is my first here in this forum so please let me shortly introduce myself: My name ist Tobias Huebner, I am a teacher from germany and I use the Raspberry Pi to teach kids how to program. I also use Minecraft and physical computing to show, how our digital world works and how to get creative. If you want to know more - I have recorded a video training, here is the trailer:

I also have a website www.medienistik.de with materials for teachers, infos about the Pi etc.

I also work a lot with video games in school: We program little games with Scratch and build own game controllers. For this, I love to use RetroPie, because it is easy to use and the kids have a lot of fun with old games like Prince of Persia or newer ones like Cave Story.

But there is a huge problem when it comes to use Retro Pie in schools - it includes Duke Nukem 3D and Quake 3 pre-installed and these games are still banned in Germany. You have to remove them in order to use the software legally here in germany.

Doom and Quake were also banned, but in 2011, id software asked to remove them from the index and since then, they can be legally bought here in germany.

Do you think it is possible to make a "german version" of RetroPie without these games? Please do not get me wrong, I know these games are in many ways milestones of gaming and I do not want to question that, but right know, it simply is not legal to use RetroPie in any "official" kind of way, like in schools, public places like a maker faire or something like that or to show it to anyone under the age of 18, simply because of these two games.

RetroPie 4.0 which is about to be released does not include these games by default. Is that enough ?

They still are installable via the RetroPie-Setup script. You can of course remove that, or not have a net connection and then it would be fine (if there is a net connection games like this can be installed from the command prompt by anyone who knows what they are doing).

Wow, I wish I had cool stuff like that to play with when I was in school.

Yeah - that is perfect! Thank you for the quick answer and the work you have done. Kids love to build their own controllers, connect them to the GPIO-Port and play some retro games and RetroPie makes that very simple. Best regards and greetings from germany!

@herb_fargus Yes, they were released in a time, when people were very concerned about violence in games, especially when they were as "realistic" as Shooters like Doom. In these days, even games like "Dark Forces" from LucasArts were banned - and they are still today.

I believe they contained Nazi symbols & swastikas on some of the levels too.
