      Running on Ubuntu 22.04 and latest RetroPie script... Latest ADVMAME source and compiled without any issues.

      When I start ADVMAME, no problem... as soon as I open the popup via TAB or ESC. The game freezes and I'm stuck. I'm forced to kill the process from shell. As settings in advmame.rc are default.

      Any ideas?

        Try adding misc_smp no into $HOME/.advance/advmame.rc.
        Any particular reason you're using advmame instead of a more up-to-date arcade emulator ?

          @mitu thanks. I'll try this option and see if it helps. I'm using advmame because I'm trying to get a good looking vector setup. I've been cycling through all of the emulators to see which gives me the "best" results.
