Hi all, im building a cabinet for my retropie, and am going for a six button layout, if i have buttons a,b,x,y, and R1, L1 on the group of six. i have made holes ready for two coin buttons, which i think would be select, for one and two players, plus a single button for exit or hotkey. Would i have to put another two buttons in for the saving of games. thanks for any help

When you say saving a game; what do you mean exactly? Games usually save differently per game? Can you give an example of the game you'd want to run?

@retropieuser555 Thanks for your reply, of the top of my head it was a snes game or nintendo game,
i am a young 56 year old trying to build this arcade for the grand kids when they come round. they used to love my old jamma cocktail machine i bought years ago, sadly i sold it a few years back.
Im not sure if i done the right thing being a noob to the programming ect, so i purchased a micro sd that had games already loaded, thinking this would save time. Iv been setting up another pi i have with botacera, and am sort of learning all about the roms and configs ect on that. I have a couple of pi 4s 2G ones, and a 4G one, and waiting for my pi 5 to turn up, i have a few projects that im planning on doing. I just really need to know is more buttons better than not enough, sound odd i know, but im trying to cover a lot of games iv never see. thanks again for your help

@captin You should be okay with 8 buttons as that's the max the SNES had and the Mega Drive/Genesis only had 8 (or 4 for the earlier controller). The era before then only usually had 2 to 4 buttons. So you have enough providing you're not going for games beyond the 4th generation

if you have a hotkey enable button, you can use a button combo to save/load/exit/bring up the menu - see https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Controller-Configuration/#hotkey.

So you shouldn't need dedicated load/save buttons if you already have a hotkey enable button.

@retropieuser555 Thanks very much, i should be good then, i will have enough room on the top control panel if i need more, the player one and two, and coin or select and hot key or exit are on the lower front. thanks again.
