RetroPie on the Pi 5 - what's left to be done?

So what method/guide did you follow in installing it on the Pi 5?
Any guide/suggestions as to how you got it running well would be greatly appreciated :)

It’s the same as the official version, but it includes images with the instructions.

Also, don't forget to add the line kernel=kernel8.img in the /boot/firmware/config.txt . It's not reference in the guide

Why is this needed? Where in the file should I add it?

Some emulators crash without this line. You need to add it to the end of the config.txt file.

Just type from a terminal window:

sudo nano /boot/firmware/config.txt

add the kernel parameter and press ctrl+o to save the change and ctrl+x to exit. After that restart the system.

@matchaman I would say proper mesa/vulkan support. For both retroarch cores and those who experiment with Box64/Wine64

Anyone know if there is a timeline on Retro Pie for the Pi 5? I read that I could manually install retro pie over an OS but before I attempt it, I figured I would see if there is any info. on a release.

would be great to hear something about official release for pi 5. just bought the new one and thought retropie would be ready for it...seems not yet...a timeline would be cool...

@begg if you are not into playing ports then it's easily missed.

It was just posted there to try and help out a fellow user who is having issues with a emulator that is installable from my collection.

But i dont have an flawless experience with Saturn-emulation.

I use everything out of the stock, did not change anything and did no oc.
I installed "lr-beetle-saturn" from the experimental cores and tried Sega-Rally (to test 3D performance) and a pinball-game ("Necromonium" or something like that) for 2D only.

The result was not the one you were spoking of: it was similar to N64 on a Pi3: scrolling lags, bad audio,.... :/
This is spoken for running this emulator out of the stock: did you change anything to get this flawless performance?
Do i have to install this infamous "Vulkan"-driver?

Most of the games should run without issues, with some exceptions, such as Die Hard Arcade and Virtua Fighter. Sega Rally runs fine most of the time at 60 fps, with a few moments in some races that experience frame drops for a few seconds. What resolution are you using?

Vulkan doesn't work well with this emulator so the driver is not the issue.

Jumping in. I'm using GL and lr-beetle-saturn is very solid. 60fps, no stutter with Sega Rally Championship. No overclock.

If you are running in 4K, change to 1080P. There are threads around here to advise. Also avoid any heavy shaders.

Here are my RetroArch Video settings. Might want to compare:

On-topic, I don't think there is more to be done with this emulator or its configuration. For me, it's been rock-solid.

@Vermont which solution would allow me to quickly get on my feet with a couple Dreamcast games, while allowing me to have access to a temperature output so I can test my cooling system?

I am using 1920x1080 @60Hz at 4:3 ratio for all emulators.
Plus the "ZRT_CRT_fast"-Shader.
I will deactivate the shader and have a look what happens in the evening :)
As it runs perfect at your setups i am pretty sure that is something wrong with my installation.
Even more as i realized yesterday that the performance of Amiberry is much worse than on my Pi4 or even Pi3...that cannot be true, there is something wrong indeed.
On the other side DC and PSP do run much better, so it is not a faulty CPU or something like that.

I uploaded my backup RPi5 image a few days ago. If you can try and with it and make sure that you have the official PSU for the Pi5

To be honest....i wanted to use your image indeed :D
But i could not download it from this Microsoft-Cloud, i had a fully working internet, every device had full connection, but this cloud told me "problems with the internet connection".
After 3 tries i canceled that download and decided to install manually ^^

I have the genuine Power-Supply & The genuine cooler-system, it has to be something in my software-setup.
I will try again this weekend, i am still very relaxed.

i did not really play amiga-games, i just have them because i had a real machine as a kid
i never had a saturn, so the emulation is just the cream on the cake, but not really important to have
i like to solve problems :D
