When going into game on mame get black screen and cannot get out

Hi I'm a first timer, still learning, when i go into Mame and select a game I get a blank screen and cannot exit out what could i be doing wrong

@Freddy2370 Sorry when higligting a game to play my screen goes blank and I am unable to exit back to the main screen I am using a HDMI to dvi connector could this be the problem or have I maybe stuffed up my config sys
