I'm using a Raspberry Pi 5 with a touchscreen inside a case. I know this setup isn't officially supported, but it works with this tutorial: https://pimylifeup.com/raspberry-pi-retropie.

I want the default output to be my TV via HDMI, but the touchscreen keeps turning on and displaying EmulationStation and games, while everything else outputs correctly to HDMI. I've tried modifying /boot/firmware/config and /boot/firmware/cmdline, but the issue persists.

Any ideas on how to make it so I don't need to disconnect the touchscreen when I want to play on the TV?

How is your touchscreen connected? You might be able to use xrandr to specify which display to use emulationstation on

@retropieuser555 The touchscreen is connected in a case with a ribbon cable connected directly to the RPi.
