Hi, I've had great fun over the last week, buying a Pi3 and installing retropie, finding a ps3 controller in a charity shop and getting it all working, including kodi. I've had to re image an SD only once on the way!

Now ive let the kids in on my little project, they absolutely love it, and fight with my wife whilst she's reliving her 'Sonic' youth! One feature that I would love to see, is a pin to protect the access to the retropie tab, or hiding it away with the 'quit' pop up screen. I've lost count of the amount of times my youngest had found the blue settings screens for retropi and rasbian.

Many thanks to the developers who put in all the hard work so ordinary people such as myself can follow a simple set of instructions and get something as awesome as Retropie up and running.

There is a Emulationstation Kids mode in Experimental.
No idea on the details but they can be found here: https://github.com/retropie/retropie-setup/wiki/Child-friendly-EmulationStation
It features a Kiosk mode which hides away all the things they shouldn't have acces to

Hey, the kidmode branch was made specifically for this use case. Have a look at the wiki @GetKeyOpenDoor mentioned above.
Basically, it allows you to select two additional UI modes (apart from the regular 'SuperUser' mode) : kiosk and kid.
With kiosk, most config options are hidden, as are items in your gamelists that are explicitly set to hidden=yes.
In kid mode, only items set to be kid=yes are shown, allowing for PG games to be installed without you having to worry about a four year old having a go at their first 'fatality'.

Mind you, It's still in experimental, So back that shit up!
plus i haven't found the time to see if anything has broken with Retropie v4+. (actually i've had some report of the filtering failing in case of nested directories and combinations of hidden/favorites etc).

I'd love to get your feedback!

If tetris has thought me anything, it's that errors pile up and that accomplishments dissappear.

Hey thanks for the replies. After reading the wiki, I tried the kiosk mode and that goes halfway to what i was after. I would like to hide the whole retropie tab from the front screen (as well as some of the menu items), I like the hidden code function to get back to the full UI though. Hiding any screen/menu where things can be altered would make the whole system more child ( or ' I know what i'm doing' adult) friendly.
