I am currently running retropie 3.8 i believe, and I would like to have audio playing during my splashscreen video. I have the video installed and playing, but i get no audio because I'm using a usb audio device, and I believe omxplayer doesn't support that.

I tried to adjust the file /etc/init.d/asplashscreen with the line mplayer -ao alsa:device=hw=1.0 "$line" which plays my video for a second, but then shuts down and eventually just goes to the emulation station screen.

Does anyone know how to properly use mplayer instead of omxplayer to run the full video for the splashscreen on boot up?

@andybarrn actually the line that I adjusted in asplashscreen ended up saying mplayer -ao alsa:device=hw=1.0 /home/pi/RetroPie/splashscreens/video/test.mp4 and it worked for a few seconds and then stopped working.

So I believe the issue is that emulationstation won't allow the video from mplayer to play over it. I've tried adding --ontop to the line in order to have it play over emulationstation, but that program always seems to be over mplayer, and I can only hear the audio of the video after emulationstation starts.
