      Pi Model: 2
      RetroPie Version Used: 3.8.1
USB Devices connected: wireless keyboard adapter, 2 Player Xin-Mo, two USB iBuffalo SNES controllers
      Controller used: iBuffalo SNES controller
Error messages received: Subtle lag. Noticeable on games that need quick response and accuracy
Custom: I have an image overlay with NO shaders for SNES and GBA. Mame I have a shader and overlay.

Hey guys. I can feel a subtle lag when playing games on GBA, SNES, MAME with my USB SNES iBuffalo controllers and my 2 Player Xin-Mo arcade buttons. I have had a few people sit down and play some GBA and snes roms and they noticed the lag too.

A couple examples of games played:
      Galaga (MAME)
      Street Fighter 2 (SNES)
      Mega Man Zero 4 (GBA)

The subtle lag is most noticeable with games that require accuracy and speed. Anyone else have this issue and if so, how did you go about fixing it?

You should update to the latest RetroPie to make sure you have any emulator input latency fixes.

You should switch your screen to "game mode" mode if it has one.

What is the best way to update my retropie? The last time I did it, it messed up a bunch of settings and customs configs.

I am using a 21" led computer monitor. I will look into its settings.

Maybe I could have re-worded my question better.

I HAVE checked the documentation before posting. As I mentioned in my reply, the last time I followed the documentation in the link you sent it messed up a bunch of my settings and custom configs. I had to rebuild everything.

As of recent I have created a backup since everything is exactly the way I want it. So if I follow the wiki documentation again, is it normal to do the update and loose some of my setup?

If updating does fix the subtle lag issue that would be great.

It is never planned that stuff you have set-up breaks, but I can't guarantee it hence backing up first. Sometimes certain packages are reworked in a way that isn't very backward compatible, but backup - try and update and then post if you need help ?
