I don't think that white line is anything to do with the pi or software/drivers/overscan etc. Sorry man, now I think I know why you got it so cheap and why your seller claims that he "... know nothing about these so please look at photos - this has not been tested and as is..."
but look on the bright side, at least the line isn't dead centre of the screen!
as they say, if it's too good to be true...

That sux. Its not that big of a deal really. Could be worse I guess ,like you said.
Edit: Did a clean install and did not install the touchscreen drivers. Problem solved
