RetroUSB AVS

As much as I LOVE my RetroPie my 150+ NES cartridges need some play time too and my NES just looks bad on a modern TV
I think I just wet myself after coming across this today.....

I think I'll have to add this to so my ROMs aren't going to waste. Original carts sure are getting pricey

Oh dude, I just saw a review on YouTube about this product. I think it's a cool thing if you have many carts like you do but for the most of us well, we don't own carts at all so we have to stick to emulation and ssssttttt-dont-talk-about-piracy-but-we-all-do-it lol
That PowerPak isn't that something just like the Everdrive?
It's so darn expensive man. I'll stick to my RetroPie and my modded Wii (great for GameCube backups) and PSP.
-
@PetroRie i have a modded psp go, a modded wii and 10 raspberry pi's. I never made it to modifying the wii for gamecube backups. However i dont use it for emulators anymore thanks to these sweet pi's. I hate that the neo geo and cps emulators never got updated for the psp making them unuseable for later psp 2000's firmware and later systems.

@edmaul69 You speak my language! The problem with the Wii was that it plays the Gamecube games in Gamecube mode, there is a program called Nintendont which allows you to play your Gamecube games from USB because ehh ... you want want to scratch your original Gamecube games right? You can also play them with a different controller. Just look for Nintendont app for Wii.
SNES emu on the Wii was pretty good, the NES too but the Genesis was just horrible. I used my PSP for PSX games and some games had some problems like you cannot switch to the next disk, I'm glad I got a RP I actually almost got an Android handheld device for 200EUR. The entire RP3 kit was like 60EUR lol.
-
@PetroRie the psx games on psp is really good now. The new "pbp" versions that have all the iso's in 1 file makes it easy to switch discs. Plus these new versions all boot on any of the newer firmwares. You dont have to use a popsloader anymore. I havent found a single psx game that doesnt work perfect yet.
-
@edmaul69 The problem I had was with Fear Effect 1, I couldn't switch the disk. When ever I did the game didn't load. It works fine in RetroPie (thank God).
-
@PetroRie hey, unless it can be tested without a gamesave, if you want, if you post a gamesave or if you sign up on atariage.com's forums you can send me a pm with a zip of your gamesave i would be glad to test it with my setup. If it works for me then i can tell you my whole setup to try to make it playable for you.

@Ekstreme this actually looks pretty cool spec wise for a console. Cheaper than the $450 nes console thats available now that only does s-video and composite. I would love to turn one into a pi system with its 4 controller ports, micro usb and hdmi, but not for $185.

I'll take that useless FPGA board off your hands when your done. ;)
-
@mediamogul it would hurt knowing i was modifying an fpga system. There just isnt enough of them designed out there and most companies use cheap poorly emulated system instead of something more accurate even when it has been done and offered to the companies who hold the rights to the consoles. (Atari and intellivision productions.. Possibly sega too) But i have modded tons of expensive consoles and controllers so whats one more? :)

I admire your bravery. I could never talk myself into permanently modifying my childhood Power Glove to access it's full range of movement even though the idea was very tempting.
-
Would be cool if someone made a comparison video between Retropie on R3 vs AVS retroUSB. I know most hardcore people seek the fast response time from the AVS, but I am curious about the look.
-
I am curious about the look.
Below is a comparison shot that gives an example as to the difference in look between game play on the AVS to the Hyperkin RetroN 5 which also uses RetroArch to emulate the NES. While neither is perfect, the color palette for the AVS is much closer to the original. Supposedly it will look even closer after a planned firmware patch in the near future.
-
@mediamogul
Retroarch is made up of different emulators. I'm using fceumm on my Pi2, and have quite a few palletes to choose from. The default did look like the Retron5 pic, but I found this one that looks pretty decent. -
Very nice! I use lr-fceumm as well and I've managed to completely overlook the palette settings.
-
Wow, the number of color palettes is remarkable. According to most user accounts, both 'YUV to 3' and 'Unsaturated V5' are meant to most closely represent the the color palette of a ntsc front loading NES. I'm not around my setup at the moment, but I can't wait to try some of these out. Also, it's implied that these are both available in lr-fceumm and lr-nestopia, which is good news for those few roms that need to be run in one or the other.
-
Besides color pallete, there is the question about scanlines, blur and other filters. How close each system get to the look of a CRT monitor. The sprites were made with the CRT interference in mind, so I really wish that. The CRT-PI shader helps a lot, but sometimes the scanlines are too much noticeable.
-
The AVS has a basic scan line function, but that is it
