kodi and bluetooth controller not working

i setup retropie on a pi 3 with a GameSir BT controller, it worked fine on nes and console emulators, when i start kodi however the controller won't work. is there some other setting i need to modify to get kodi to work with this BT controller?
i running retropie 4.0-rc1

so i got it somewhat working :). i found https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/KODI with a section
"Joypad Support". so i ran "cat /proc/bus/input/devices" and got my usb BT game pad name and used it in the settings in the joystick.xml file as the instructions stated. after a reboot my pad works, BUT i can only move up in the kodi menu and left, i am not able to select anything with any of the buttons.here is my GameSir BT USB controller settings

trying to find a way to use the cross up/down/left/right buttons on the game pad to navigate the menu, and then make the select button "back button in kodi" and the start button "the select button in kodi" ??
what's funny is that i change joystick.xml in kodi to these settings http://pastebin.com/bK5kmRQu ,
it didn't use the up/down/left/right cross button on my pad like i was expecting, and also it made my B button on my gamepad the Select button in Kodi, when i had set it to 11, but 11 is my start button according to these settings http://pastebin.com/Fk07zj53
