@MennoSteenwijk Are you using a "noobs" sd card? Did you format it first then try to write the retropie image? Or are you trying to install it yourself on a booted pi based on a noobs card? What image? More information is needed as to what you did before the first boot.

i purchased a rapberry pi the box says model b+ 512MB. i bought a sd card,(
Samsung SDXC 64GB Class 10 UHS-1 Memory Card) and also bought Gowoops 5V 2.5A Power Supply. i formated the sd card, using sd formatter. Then i downloaded raspberrypi 2/3 from here "https://retropie.org.uk/download/#Pre-made_images_for_the_Raspberry_Pi" i unzipped the file using izarc , after that i burned the image to the sd card using win32 disk imager. Then i placed sd card in the raspberry pi and plugged it in. the retropie logo came p, it ran some code then i was left with pi@raspberrypi: i left it alone for about an hour and nothing happened. so i powered it off and removed the sd card. i followed the steps again and same result. then decided to use a diff sd card. its a 16gb samsung card, i cant read the rest of the details on it since its worn. any who, after following the steps again (only this time using the 16gb sd card) it left me with the error mentioned above.
--"Failed" with "Failed to start apply_noobs_os-config.service. See systemmtl status apply_noobs_os_config.service for details.--
i didnt do anything on the raspberry pi after that. Now, i had the pi hooked up to the internet with a ethernet cable. when i tried it the first few times with the 64 gb sd card. now when i tried it with the 16gb sd card, i decided to remove the ether net cable and i feel that by doing that it made progress. before i want getting anything and after removing the ethernet cable it got to that point --"Failed" with "Failed to start apply_noobs_os-config.service. See systemmtl status apply_noobs_os_config.service for details.-- so i tried it again with an ether cable plugged in and the 16gb memory card and it hangs on started update utmp. i've left it alone for about an hour and it doesnt do anyhting. and now im stuck.....

64GB cards are not formatted as FAT32, but as exFAT, you must use a tool to convert them to FAT32, as a Pi cannot boot from an exFAT partition. You must use an alternative formatting program after using the official one, to convert (re-format) the resulting exFAT file system to FAT32. Something like http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?guiformat.htm

If this is the model you have, it is not a 2 or a 3 which means that you have downloaded the wrong image for this device. You should be using the 0/1 image. I recommend reading through this:
https://www.raspberrypi.org/products/ to be sure what you have. -
@rbaker Just to avoid some confusion - You shouldn't need to reformat - so long as the disk image writing tool can see the sdcard to write to it it is fine. The partition information for RetroPie is in the image, so any existing partitions are overwritten when writing the image.

@BuZz ok great, that will save a lot of time. thank you!
-
@rbaker what model of pi do i have then? i did some research before i bought it and it said that it was the raspberry pi 3 b+. I will try the fat 32 conversion and the different image and bet back to you. Thank you!
-
@Rey how many raspberries do you see at the top left on boot? If 1 it's a raspberry pi 1 or zero. If 4 it's a raspberry pi 2 or 3.

@BuZz just one. ugh i really wanted to a pi 3 :( i thought thats what i ordered. is there such a thing as a pi 3 b+?.... also is there a model number i can base that off of so when i order my next pi i can get the correct one? i wanted the latest model because i read that it has more features for better projects.
btw thank you so much for your responses!

Hey, so i am now up and running with the retropie..... the issue was that i was trying to install the wrong image file, apparently the raspberry i have was not the pi 3 as i thought , im still not sure what model it is. any who, i have tested it and it works great. im just a bit sad it was not the model of pi that i thought i had ordered. also i read that if i tried to install the wrong image for the wrong model that there would be a different error code which NEVER came up. any who, thanks again everyone for the input! you are the best!

@Rey no such thing as a pi3 B+. Just get the standard pi 3.
