Famicom Mini (NES Classic Edition) Hacked!

Recently a guy who goes by "urandom" in Japan has hacked the Famicom Mini (NES Classic Edition everywhere else) into running Ubuntu! Since the Famicom Mini has the same hardware as the NES Classic Edition and has similar hardware to a Raspberry Pi, maybe someone who has one can work on running RetroPie on it! What is your opinion?
Here is the guide to putting Ubuntu on it translated into English (albeit being a little broken...).

@RetroPieNerd several people managed to load ubuntu. The problem now is accessing the nand flash on the board to have access to add roms to the system.

While it physically looks nice, the short wired controllers are still a deal-breaker. I personally wouldn't want to use the hardware.

True, it's a kind of a deal-breaker for the NES Classic, but to anyone who has a hacked Wii like myself, the controllers couldn't be better. When connected to a Wiimote, these beauties become the perfect, wireless* 1st party NES controller option, available for a mere ten bucks a pop. You can't beat that deal. I plan on getting four of them when the demand drops down a bit and the scalpers disappear.

@enderandrew you can buy wii nunchuck extension cables. I bought some ahead of time for this. Unfortuanately the nes classic sold at midnight in about 10 minutes here and people are bidding $350+ on ebay for them. So i sadly dont have one.

A friend of mine was fifth in line at a local Gamestop that only got three in. It's terrible that these things are so tough to find.

@mediamogul i used to camp out for systems and sell them on ebay. I camped out for 24 hours in sub zero conditions for the playstation 3. I was 13th in line at walmart with only 12 systems available. I spent the day playing soccer with several argentinan kids. A couple hours before midnight one of the kids mom showed up because his dad died. It was a terrible thing but i ended up getting the twelth one. It was a 20gb model. I paid $500 for it. I sold it on my way out the door for $1000.

Wow. I'm glad it worked out for you at the time. All the effort and uncertainty involved in such things makes me glad I'm an emulation retro-gamer. With things progressing as they are, in the not too distant future we'll be able to run the entire NES library from the free toasters they give out at the bank.

IMHO way over hyped and too expensive. Buying a RPi3 +RetroPie would be a better investment you can get the entire NES game library, cheat support, multiplayer support, plays many old consoles, has Kodi (cough... watch movies and tv shows in HD), is WAY cheaper.

the nes mini getting hacked, is great for the scene. Having access to an official nes emulator is going to be awesome once its released.

I don't know why it needs hacked in the first place. I thought Nintendo said their source code was completely open available for anybody to use on their website. I mean, sure it's nice figuring out how to install Linux on it. But if you can do that, you're already done aren't you? You don't have to reverse engineer the software because it's already OFFICIALLY online for free. The only thing you're really doing is coming up with a way to read/write the ROM, and then that opens up the ability to replace it.

@trixta What is so awesome about an official NES emulator? There have been other emu's available for years performing perfect. Paying 60 USD for this? Nah thanks I'll skip. Beside people are selling them for crazy prices online.

err, no, nintendo haven't released the source-code for their NES emulator online! why on earth would they do that?

@PetroRie obviously I need to spell it out for you. Now its been hacked, the hacking group can extract the emulator on the new mini as its based on linux. You don't have to buy a nes mini, you just need to wait for the right people to work it all out. If you think a 3rd party emulator is better then one made by nintendo, you are clearly delusional.

@trixta Copying the executable of the emulator is a far cry from having the source code. And this "hack" was merely overwriting the flash storage to run Linux instead.

yeah it contains OSS licensed software (along with any linux-based device), but the emulator won't be one of them.

Correct. I just double-checked. They use the following OSS:
- Linux kernel
- glibc
- sdl2_mixer
- sdl
- soloud
- busybox
- eudev
- cryptsetup
- libpng
- alsa-lib
- luajit
- kmod
- clovercon
Looks like the only really useful stuff in there would be in the kernel and clovercon in how they handle controllers.

Actually, Nintendo has a precedent of preferring the use of third party open source emulators in their official releases. The GameBoy Advance 'NES Classics' line was published using the source code for PocketNES. Most all of the emulator's features were stripped away, leaving only the single cartridge multiplayer link transfer ability for games under 190kB. They have also freely admitted to using open source emulators for several of their 'Virtual Console' titles, but I'm unaware of what projects were used in those cases.
