Background Music?
-
This may have been asked before but I'm getting conflicting info whenever I try to Google it. Is there any current options within the RetroPie EmulationStation setup to have background music playing when browsing systems/games? I'm seeing some posts indicating it should be possible but those are either for RecalBox or for EmulationStation itself. The ones for ES in particular are the most promising because RetroPie uses a forked version, but beyond that not a clue.
Not a deal-breaker if it's not currently possible or won't be added, just trying to see if that's actually there or not so I can finish re-setting up my bartop arcade :)
Running latest RetroPie as of last night (freshly downloaded, 3.6.0) on a Pi3, 1 X-Arcade DIY Kit connected via USB (which registers as a generic HID keyboard).

Not possible. (Well it is possible, but it's not part of RetroPie and isn't really high on the priority list) if you want that functionality you'll either have to code it in yourself or use recalbox. You can also pop in your headphones as an alternative ;)
If we ever did impliment it in the future we'd probably code it into emulationstation similar to how recalbox did it.

I'll live without it then, thanks for the fast update!
I did try RecalBox but ran into some issues; to quote digitalLumberjack (typo's fixed), "Keyboard is not officially supported," I'll take RP's ease of configuring over hand-editing a dozen config files from scratch any day :) Thanks again!

I'd love to have these playing in the background. Makes it feel like you're really at an arcade: http://arcade.hofle.com/

@zerojay That was the exact intended goal, just with some extra music playing over the top to mimic the old jukeboxes going with it :)
I came up with an idea that -might- work but I'll have to actually learn Python or some other scripting system that works on a Pi to figure it out. Basic idea is a small media player that does the music completely separate from ES, but fades the music out automatically if it sees an emulator starting. Not even sure that'd work but it gives me something to futz around with for a bit, see what I can figure out.

@Livewire It's not hard to have something like mpg123 running in the background and killing it on launch. I just haven't bothered to do it yet.

Still a learning experience, least I get to put my brain to better use than watching Netflix endlessly :)
