      Hello everyone! I'm on a Raspberry pi 3 model B running retropie 4.1.1 trying to get the mupen64plus emulator working as I want. I just got the controller setup working for N64 but then I realized that I couldn't save my games. I tried both saving in game (ocarina of time) and the save states. I tried these with multiple other games as well. Both of these save functions work for all other emulators and also for the other N64 emulator (glupen). When I try saving the game with mupen64plus there simply is no save file created in the roms/n64 folder. I tried all the different versions of mupen. I also reinstalled mupen64plus but it didn't help.

      I find it weird that the save states quick buttons don't work when the exit emulator quick button works. I'm using a xbox 360 wireless controller and I'm using the standard select+start, select+LB, select+RB for exit emulator, load state and save state. I have tried solving this problem without luck, mostly looking at https://github.com/retropie/retropie-setup/wiki/Nintendo-64 and the linked video tutorials. I tried searching these forums and the web in general for a solution without finding one.

      The lines I could find in the mupen64plus.cfg file related to this have the following values:
      SaveStatePath = "/RetroPie/roms/n64"
      SaveSRAMPath = "/RetroPie/roms/n64"
      Joy Mapping Stop = "J1B8/B9,J2B8/B9"
      Joy Mapping Load State = "J1B8/B4,J2B8/B4"
      Joy Mapping Save State = "J1B8/B5,J2B8/B5"
      SDL keysym for saving the emulator state
      Kbd Mapping Save State = 286
      SDL keysym for loading the emulator state
      Kbd Mapping Load State = 288

      Am I missing something obvious here or do anyone know a solution to this problem?

        Hello bdtkarlsson,
        I have the same problem, did you find a solution to it?
        I was experimenting to get n64 emulation adequate on my Raspberry Pi 3 Model B.
        I figured Mupen-Rice was perfect for Banjo and Kazooie.
        I played for an hour, saved the game and quit, and relaunched it right after to see if it saved, it turns out it saved successfully so I quit.

        I played some other games without saving and afterwards, when I returned to Banjo and Kazooie the save file was not present.
        I used Samba to see the N64 emulator folder, but there was no save file nor a save state file.
        The quick save, load, or retroarch menu buttons did not work either.
        Either I'm also missing something obvious, or this problem happened to both of us.

          Hi!

          I've spent quite a lot of hours trying to fix this without success. I also tried scanning the whole file system looking for the save files in case they are located somewhere outside the default folder, but I found nothing.

          It's weird that it suddenly stopped working for you. In my case I never got the saving working for mupen64plus. It works with the libretro core emulators but unfortunently the performance leaves a lot to be desired.

          I'll give this problem a few more hours before I give up, though it wouldn't surprise me if the actual fix is something really easy. If you manage to solve it I would appreciate if you would share the fix here :)

            Hello again bdtkarlsson,
            I have tried a few things but unfortunately I had no luck as well. Switching to libretro core works with saves and savestates but not mupen64plus.
            But as you mentioned, the quality is pretty awful.
            I will research some more and try to tweak the mupen64plus.cfg file to see if the input commands for the retroarch are set.
            I will let you know if I ever find a fix, but at this time it looks without hope.
            Cheers.

              update retropie-setup and update mupen64plus from binary (or just choose update all installed packages). This was fixed recently.

                    @BuZz Hi I am having this same issue running retropie 4.6 on raspberry pi 4. I read somewhere it could be linked the volume error message mixed elements not found. I started getting this error message 2 days ago after updating. Nothing I am finding is fixing the error message. When trying to save N64 games (such as Zelda) it saves and hold the saved file as long as emulation station is running. I can exit the game and go back with no problems, BUT the second I reboot the pi or restart emulation station, it wipes my most recent save. Please advise :)
