I have read the docs but I still cant get this to work. I am on rpi3 running retropie 4.1 I have the Microsoft adapter to work with my wireless xbox 360 controller. I can run the usb command when its plugged in and see Microsoft Corp. So I know the Pi can see the adapter. However, when I try to press the button to sync it wont light up. It lights up on the PC when I press it, just not on the Pi. Needless to say I think this is my issue or possible lack of drivers. Do I need to downgrade my kernel? any help would be appreciated.

                Power should be fine -
Do you have other devices connected? Have you tried disconnecting them except the controller?.

I can't advise further. Others have this working fine - if you have pressed both buttons in the correct order as documented and it won't connect, I have no other suggestions. sorry.

It shouldn't be a driver issue, as the connection between the dongle and the controller is standalone afaik.

My dongle didn't require anything to get the LED to turn on except supply power to the Pi with the dongle plugged in. If it works fine on your PC, maybe that USB plug is bad. Have you tried one of the other USB plugs on the PI just for SH!TS and G!GGLES? I have 2 Pi 3's and they both act this same way (LED light is ON once power is active). Pressing the button causes the LED to blink until you sync with a controller. The only problem I really have is sometimes the controller and the dongle blink quickly to say they're synced, then the controller still blinks slowly as if it didn't connect. But the dongle itself is USB standard, and is instantly recognized by the OS. The only thing the "drivers" do is tell the OS how to use the various inputs it gets.

I am having a similar issue. Here is my setup
                    Pi Model - zero
                    Retro Pie versio: 4.1
Built from: premade sd image - released on nov 5, 2016
                    USB devices connected:
                    linksys wifi (working)
                    wired keyboard (works)
zettaguard xbox 360 wireless receiver (lights up and seems to pair with 360 controller [after pairing light pattern is seen on the controller, the receiver stops blinking but the lights on the controller still keep blinking]) - the pairing works correctly on my windows PC so I know the dongle works.

Using a 2A powersupply so I think I should have sufficient power.

I tried using several guides (incl. https://github.com/retropie/retropie-setup/wiki/Setting-up-the-XBox360-controller) - still no joy :(

All the videos and instructions that I could find on the topic are using xboxdrv on 3.8 or below. From what I read on the github guide it says that xpad (which comes preinstalled and preenabled)should work for this application as of 4.0. - any ideas?

                      @romeoz

I know you said you have the correct power supply but this behavior really sounds like the Microsoft 360 wireless receiver just isn't getting enough power. Or like what @hansolo77 said that maybe the USB plug is bad? Might try a different USB port on your Pi. Or try a different power plug in the wall.

I have a Generic Xbox 360 wireless receiver and 3 official Microsoft Xbox 360 wireless controllers and mine lights up and connects every time with all 3. I've re-imaged my Pi several times with different version of RetroPie and the only time I had trouble was RetroPie 3.8 (I believe) using the xboxdrv driver. I had to downgrade the kernel to get it to work. Now I just use the xpad driver which works very well (except in Kodi 16.1).

                        Raspberry Pi 3
                        Retropie 4.1
                        USB Keyboard
                        USB Zettaguard Wireless Dongle
                        Bluetooth Controller
5V Fan connected to internal pins for overclock

I am also having this issue. I'm using the Zettaguard wireless dongle and I have two XBOX 360 controllers that connected at first... but now will disconnect randomly either during configuration or immediately after exiting a game (if they last that long--it's been awhile since I've actually been able to configure them). Two controllers is an absolute no-go. Won't work at all.

I have wiped my SD card and reinstalled the Retropie 4.1 software to start over and have uninstalled and reinstalled the xpad driver multiple times as well as trying the Xboxdrv driver. Neither work for me. I have a 2.5A power supply that came with my Canakit off Amazon but I have added a fan to the internal pins of the Pi. I usually have a USB keyboard connected as well and right now I've got a bluetooth controller connected so I can at least play one player games. It's a Matricom G-Pad XYBA from Amazon. I've tried three different XBOX controllers with NEW batteries.

So as the XBOX controller sits and flashes at me endlessly, I will occasionally see the text on screen say that the controller connects and is not configured. This will happen multiple times while I'm using my bluetooth controller to play. So it gets a connection but then loses it...SO FRUSTRATING. When I get connected and try to configure the controller, it will lose connection during the "configure input" mode and my system is frozen. The keyboard won't exit out of this screen and I have to pull the plug. ... Is there a way to hard-connect these controllers by editing a CFG file and forcing the Retropie to keep a connection to the controller?
