SDLPoP (Prince of Persia) Joystick Save

I loaded SDLPoP (Prince of Persia) from the Experimental menu. It works great and plays great with a joystick but is it possible to save the game from the joystick?
You can start the game, play the game and exit the game but I don't see a way to save the game. It would make the game fully playable with a joystick only.
