Can you plug a breadboard into a raspberry pi and configure it as if it ws a normal controller without any extra hassle. I have never used a breadboard before so any general tips would be nice also

Plenty of ways, at its most simple you just wire gpio pinout direct to a breadboard. Or go with a breakout board available in many forms and flavours from lots of vendors.

could i just attach this to any breadboard and it work?
-
absolutely. you could do a search, there are many like it from many manufacturers, varying prices, you can't go wrong with any. they all do the same thing, breaking out the gpio pins so you can hook up a breadboard for experimenting.
