Two player issues with xbox controllers

I bought a RaspberryPi 3 last week and have been setting it up for my dads birthday. My focus is to get the MAME perfect as that is what he mainly plays but I'm struggling to get two players working. I'm using an original Xbox 360 wired controller and an Xbox 360 afterglow controller. When I setup the Afterglow controller the RT and LT buttons aren't recognized, I didn't think this would be a problem as I didn't need them. Primarily I want to play with the original Xbox controller and use the Afterglow one for when we do Two player. My issue is I set up the controls for Player 1 as if were using the original Xbox controller, If I plug in the After glow controller it takes player 1 and because it has less buttons the button mapping becomes jumbled. Is there anyway to lock Joy1 controls to a controller and set the other to Joy2. I found something similar on Reddit however it seemed outdated as it produced different results for me than shown in the tutorial. Sorry for dragging on but I want to try and cover as many possible questions in this one post. Thanks a lot! :)
