I always loved playing games like Time Crisis at the arcade. I was wondering if there's a way to get a gun to work that is compatible with games like Time Crisis? I know I could just purchase an Aimtrak gun, but as nice as that'd be I don't want to spend that much money.

It's funny, I'm actually confirming the purchase of an arcade gun in another tab as I type this. Support for gun games is very spotty in RetroPie. Technically, support is there for mouse-based gun input devices in RetroArch for NES, Super Nintendo, Sega Master System, Sega Genesis/MegDrive, Sega CD and MAME. However, the mouse functionality is currently broken on the Pi for everything but the NES, SNES and MAME. Of those three, only MAME supports absolute coordinate mice, which is what most of the arcade guns are.

Edit: A low cost solution to computer arcade gun gaming can be had with a DolphinBar, a Wiimote and a gun casing for the Wiimote.

Edit 2: Being preoccupied at the time, I apparently neglected just about every fundamental aspect of your questions. It should also be noted that while MAME will allow gun/mouse use, it's unlikely that Pi is powerful enough to run 'Time Crisis' and other similar gun games released past the mid 90s.

I just found this low cost solution as well. The guy mounted two LED lights into a classic NES zapper and uses a Wiimote as a stationary sensor under the television. The trigger is wired to a Nunchuk that centers and fires. I'll definitely be giving this a shot once I get some free time past Christmas.
