Tried different SD card, but issue doesn't seem to change.
Same cards were able to successfully launch Kodi when using RecalboxPi Model: 3B
SD Card: Sandisk 8 GB as well as Sandisk 64 GB
RetroPie Version Used: 4.1
Built From: ISO images from Retropie downloads, then transferred using Win32DiskImager
USB Devices connected: PS3 Controller and Razer Keyboard
Controller used: PS3 Controller
Error messages received: none -
@seanami disconnect the ps3 controller.

is this a known bug, and if so is there a resolution or workaround
-
@seanami it is a known issue - you will need to wait until Kodi 17
-
@BuZz Is it specifically ps3 controller? or is there a list of ones that fall into the bug category so I can use a compatible one
-
@seanami Kodi 16 is problematic with many controllers. but the crash is usually due to the ps3 controller. However, I can't advise as I don't use a gamepad with Kodi.

You have to write your own Kodi controller mapping file from scratch.
The easiest workaround is to just use a little Bluetooth keyboard (which is nice to have anyways). I've got this one and it works pretty well.
Kodi 17 should be coming out before too long and it has a controller mapper built into it so this shouldn't be an issue after that.

I'm not sure but it seams like the PS3/4 and Xbox 360/One controllers don't work out of the box using the xpad driver.
If you want to make your own PS3 mapping for Kodi, then check out this thread with my experience of making a Xbox 360 mapping file:
