I dusted off an old gameport (15-pin) steering wheel that's been in the attic for a good decade. I wired it up to an Arduino and am now getting the steering wheel position on /dev/ttyACM0, also the button states. Now I have a bit of a quandry. I have very little idea about arcade/retro gaming in general. All the Mame games I've played have been stick-based, so I'm looking for a driving game to use with the steering wheel, and then I'll need to figure out how to adapt my Arduino setup so I can use the steering wheel in games.

I realise the answer to the question is a bit open-ended: Which emulator should I use? Which game should I aim to get working? I know there is Outrun, which can be used with a steering wheel, so maybe that one, unless there is something better? I'm looking for games that a 5-year-old can play without too much trouble as this would be mainly for my kids.

Is there some standard way that USB steering wheels send their values and how do I find that out? Or can these emulators execute external programs/access pipes or whatever to get the values?

Any clues about where to start much appreciated.
