Can not get d-pad to work in AdvMame - only analog.

I have been using AdvMame for my Pi3 with my Wii U Pro controller but only the analog stick works for games and I want to use the d-pad. I press 'tab' to go into the AdvMame setup during a game to set the controls but when I press the d-pad it does not register as a control.
D-pad works great with other emulators, menus, etc... Please help.. :-) Thanks

How to replicate the problem: Start AdvMame with game.. only analog controller works
