Absolutely love the 'beat em up' genre ever since i had golden axe & streets of rage on the sega megadrive as a kid.. Nothings changed im now 28 & still love gaming! Now we all know streets of rage 1-3, golden axe 1-3, final fight 1-3. Heres the alternatives..

I have compiled a list of well known & not so known beat em ups that i have on my raspberrypi 3, definitely worth playing (especially co-op with a friend) feel free to contribute any i missed or still not discovered..

May i add 'Dynamite Cops' for the Dreamcast, 'Dragon Valor' for the PS1 (Extremely laggy, literally unplayable) & 'Night Slashers' for the MAME (wont boot) are the only games on here i cant get working right on the rpi3 all the others are confirmed working!

@greenhulk MAME, the 0.78 master list notes it as having some issues, but aside from a little slowdown at times, it's totally playable and runs at good speed on my non-overclocked Pi 3.

                    @greenhulk

A new favorite of mine that I only learned about this year is...

Stone Protectors!!! Our stones of power glow!!!

In an effort to ride the coattails of the Ninja Turtle craze and troll doll phenomenon that were both insanely popular at the time, this efficient pop culture hybrid was born. Aside from it's unique beat-em-up qualities, it makes great use of the SNES color palette and is a surprising beautiful looking game.

                    Stone Protectors

                    They even had their own

                    and recently
                    on 'Robot Chicken'. Good stuff!

Another unheard of PS1 beat em up 'Nekketsu Oyako/Hot Blooded Family', please note there is & english translated version of this game. Crazy stages, very fun to play! I mean the 2nd stage you are swallowed up & fighting your way through a whales stomach lol

alt text alt text alt text

Panzer Bandit (PSX), anime influenced beat em up, wide variety of moves & weapons, sadly its only in japanese but pretty simple to navigate into game in 1 or 2 players

Another fun one for MAME is The Simpsons

The 4-Player version forces you to play as whatever player you've inserted the coin for, but the two player variant allows you to select your character.

Great list and I love Beat Em Ups especially on the arcade!

You forgot the Double Dragon games which came out on just about every system!

                                PSX:
                                Tekken 3's "Tekken Force Mode"

                                Mega CD/Sega CD:
                                Final Fight CD

                                SNES:
Final Fight Guy (since SNES Final Fight 1 doesn't have Guy, he gets his own game)

                                NES:
River City Ransom (probably be the best NES game ever!!)
                                Mighty Final Fight

                                Gameboy Advance:
                                Final Fight One
River City Ransom EX (like the NES version but with bug fixes and new stuff)

                                MAME/FBA:
                                64th. Street - A Detective Story
Alien Storm (well you use a gun instead of fists so I'm not sure if this counts)
                                B.Rap Boys
                                Batman (only 1 player)
Captain America and the Avengers (you had for SNES but not arcade)
Captain Commando (you had for SNES but not arcade)
Crime City (another use a gun instead of fists game)
Final Fight (you had for SNES but not arcade)
Michael Jackson's Moonwalker (best in MAME4ALL)
Midnight Resistance (use a gun instead of fists game)
The Punisher (you had for Sega Megadrive but not arcade)
Robocop 1 & 2 (use a gun instead of fists game)
Sunset Riders (use a gun instead of fists game)
Superman (okay this is a crappy game but it's 2 players!)
Wild West C.O.W.-Boys of Moo Mesa (use a gun instead of fists game)

@backstander said in Beat Em Up Gems! Games List:

River City Ransom (probably be the best NES game ever!!)

When I discovered the emulators some years ago I almost cried just because I was able to play this game again. :-)
And I was really happy because I could take screenshots of the password screen instead of writing down that paragraph password.

Oh I hated putting in those password but I actually got pretty fast at it after awhile. This got more annoying because now I had to enter in the passwords for both players when playing cooperatively with friends lol.

Did you hear about the New River City Ransom Password Discovered After 27 Years?

River City Ransom EX on the Gameboy Advance has a built in save function and bug fixes and new moves and some new updated animations. You can even play with the AI controlled 2nd player. I would highly recommend it if you're a fan of the original!

(I don't know why they don't pick up coins in this video)

I totally forgot about Ninja Baseball Batman, I played this game a while ago on the Pi and I forgot its name. This game is freaking AWESOME! Anyways there are 4 games on the PSX I would like to mention:

                                        1. Legend; My brother rented this one back in the 90ties and we played the crap out of it.

                                        1. Crisis Beat; this game was hillarious just like the title above my brother rented this one, I have this one on the Pi.

                                        1. Shaolin (EU)/Lord of Fist (US); This game is a fighting/rpg style game, not entirely a beat m up but is worth mentioning it. If you like Chinese Martial Arts you will love this game. It has great story lines. In the US the game was released under a different title Lord of Fist.

                                        1. Jojo's Bizarre Adventure; A fighting/beat m up game. The story line is great, one of the best fighting games on the PSX in my opinion. If you love fighting games and the PSX you really should give this game a try.

Theres a few ive never even heard of there so will get them onto my rpi3 to play. Didn't even know the jojo game had like a shoot em up element to it, thought it was just 1 on 1 fighting, must say this made me chuckle lol..

Now my latest discovery (if they boot) are a series called 'BOR: Beats Of Rage' for the dreamcast, they look incredibly cool & vary from a king of fighters, xmen, resident evil & street fighter beat em ups (theres loads more too). Oh & a streets of rage remake!!
Im yet to try them out but they are next on my to do list.

Now that sounds like OpenBOR which is in the experimental install section of RetroPie. It's not working very well right now because it is a very old build. I guess it got ported to the Dreamcast as well.

I can't find the link but someone was talking about using the old MS-DOS port of OpenBOR to play the BOR PAKs in Dosbox which works pretty good. I'm curious to see if the Dreamcast versions run any better.

Update: here is the thread talking about OpenBOR for Dosbox/MS-DOS:

Also in the RetroPie-Extra addon script, you can get the Streets of Rage Remake!
