Arcade controls vs gamepads

Hi guys
Have had a search around but dont seem to be able to find too much information on the integration of traditional arcade controls (joystick/6buttons). Most everyone seems to be working with gamepads (im sure this is not the case due to arcade builds). Im really keen to give RetroPie (and Attract Mode) a crack and am hoping that my current arcade build with the controls connected to Pi via GPIO can be paired together with a minimum of fuss. Are people out there using the Adafruit utility for such a thing or something else? Like i said, I've had a bit of a look round but if im missing something obvious sorry bout that.
