Top requested arcade games for overlays
-
@UDb23 Thanks for the reply! Yes, the overlays don't show up at all when the rom is playing, for some weird reason :-/
And yes, made sure the naming on files is the same! Thanks again for your help, really appreciate it!
-
@simbz23 then maybe something's wrong with the PNG file. Had already some case of png's that were displayed correctly on Mac and Windows but Photoshop was unable to open due to some format incompatibility.
I'll test when I get back home and let you know. -
@simbz23 Solved. You had png image filenames, in the .cfg file, within " " while it should be just the filename (no " " for filenames). ;-)
I also checked the PNG's and compressed them (3.5 MB -> 1.5 MB, 1.5MB-> 1 MB respectively) at same image quality (there is no lossy compression in png files).

@UDb23 Wow, stupid mistake. Apologize greatly for wasting your time on that! Thought I double checked everything inside and outside those files. Thank you so much for your help!
-
@UDb23 You might laugh at this. So the other cfg files I had that were working, all had "" around the filename. Somehow those were working lol? But for the overlays that weren't working, your fix of removing the quotes did the trick! Glad everything is working but I am stumped on that one lol...
-
@simbz23 In fact it's really strange. Unless there was some unreadable ascii code in the cfg these cfgs should work like all the others !
For my overlays I used to use " " for the filenames but recently started with just the filename. Both version all worked so far.
I re-checked the Libretro Overlay wiki right now. Guess what: at the top it says just filename but examples at the bottom show use of " " !!?!!From your experience it seems that NOT using " " makes sure overlay images DO work.
I'll keep this approach for future overlays (no " " ) -
Edited the wiki accordingly: removed " " from image filenames.
-
@UDb23 Wow, really weird. I agree, best to go with the method that works the most! Again, thanks for the help!
-
@simbz23 You're welcome.
btw I'd add these 2 overlays to the Repository. Is it ok for you ? Do you know who created them (to give credit)? -

I'm not sure if it's a rule. Actually my script uses
"quotes"
when editing those .cfg files and AFAIK it's working fine. Maybe the problem is with some keyboards (e.g.: UK keyboards) that input“these quotes”
instead of"these ones"

Yes, I have that same issue if I type something in MS Word/Google Docs and it uses those “ ” quotes so I have to fix them before I put them on my Pi (I usually forget). To work they have to be " " quotes. I'm in the US btw.

And, as usual, ...
you got it right ! ;-)
that's @simbz23 original cfg... zoomed
Left quote is indeed the wrong one.Still we have to decide a standard naming for the Repo and your script.
At this point I'd suggest no quotes for overlay image filename, to avoid this kind of issues. -

River City Ransom for either the NES
First draft for the overlay (scale integer).
Next is side bars only.

@UDb23 I had a suspicion that my macbook pro keyboard or OS might be an issue! Good to know. I dunno how I am supposed to prevent that?
And yah I dont mind, they are not mine, this guy posted it as a link with his youtube video, I will try to find his video link again to try and find a name.

Wanted to share and give something back to this thread @UDb23 for your help with the stupid quote issue. Here are a Mortal Kombat and Michael Jackson's Moonwalker overlay. Hopefully they are somewhat decent to everyone here!
-
@simbz23 did you make them or got from other place?
If they are from you, I would like to suggest you to create a github repository to put those images. I'm working on a tool to make it easier to install overlays (and other arts) on RetroPie. If you put the files in a github repo it will be easier to make my tool install your art.
-
@meleu I made them myself, and that sounds good, I will make a repo!
-
@simbz23 or you could create a merge request for the existing Overlay repo @meleu and myself are managing. In this way they're all in a single place.
Please make sure to check the folder & file naming convention (including the info.txt file).
It's quite easy; just look at existing overlays in the Repo. -

Well done, thanks!
If I may give a suggestion: could you split the instructions part? From 2 "rows" to 4 by splitting each row graphics in two. It's a little bit small to read in current layout.

@UDb23
I think it might be best if @simbz23 makes his own repo and @meleu script can access it as needed. The only reason is so that @simbz23 will have full control of his work and if/when he does more overlays, he can just upload them without having to do a merge request and wait for it to get added. I hope that doesn't sound mean but I think it would be the best for everyone involved :-)
