@rbaker raspberry pi 3 model b v1.2, power adapter output :5v 2.5a , love rpi 8gb sd card. Because it had worked in the past I didn't see the point. But the pi was giving me the error message that ot didn't have enough space to install kodi or xboxdvr to use controller

@Fastcat4 which image exactly did you download and burn to your sd card? Please name it exactly, the file name of the image you burned using Win 32 disk imager

As a quick sidebar, it should be noted that unless you plan on key-mapping your controller, you should really be using the Xpad driver, as detailed here.

@Fastcat4 ok, do you notice how I am working my way down the list and asking for the things in post 2 again? If you had posted, we would have been past this stage in seconds? Next you need to post what you did to burn the image and which guide you followed.

@rbaker I opened win 32. Selected the file from the file from the desk top and clicked write to write it to the sd card

@Fastcat4 removing the card with the power on can corrupt it. Have you tried an alternative card? What guide did you follow when using Win 32 disk imager? Did you format the card according to the wiki before writing the image file?

@rbaker I'm not sure what guide. But I formatted to fat 32. Before writing with win 32. Have tried another card because I don't have one but looks like is the next option.

@Fastcat4 If you've read the wiki it details how to burn an image to a card and this was the guide that @rbaker was asking about. The more you skirt around these details that are asked of you, the harder it is to determine what you've done, so what may have gone wrong in that process.
We're not asking these things to be awkward, we're asking so we know what setup you've got and how you got there so we can try and break down what may have happened to give you this issue.
The more you ignore what is asked, the less chance anyone can figure out how to help you, or even have the patience to stick around and help you.

@Fastcat4 If you pulled your card with the power on, watched
[removed], followed it, got a blinking green light, I conclude that you have a bad card that can no longer be read - did you say it formatted ok after you pulled it? You need another card to test. This didn't need 35+ posts by the way, just follow the info in the second post in future to save people time and energy because you yourself said "I will try to do better" (in post 3) which kind of suggested that you agreed with post 2 and would do it. Also, your post title is not helpful to other searchers, a better one would be "cannot get pi to boot after reformat" and there are many suggestions posted on the forum already. This title together with your setup info leads to faster solutions. -
@markyh444 I appreciate you both trying to help. Like I said before I'm new to this. I'm not trying to be vague. If I knew that was the guiDE he was asking for I would have said it earlier. I've looked at a ton of things trying to figure it out on my own. So when you say wiki's and guides I'm trying to give you the info your asking for.

@Fastcat4 First off, I appreciate people being new to these and not getting their heads around it. However, the info we asked for, and guides and wiki we pointed you towards are all in the stickied "read this first post" at the top of every page of the forum.
This includes all links to the RetroPie wiki which we have been directing you towards.
It also has a table in it to copy and paste to provide accurate details as to your setup and build.
I don't believe you have read that post nor the wiki anything past a cursory glance.
As before, I diagnose a corrupt SD card. I'd check for a compatible card (use Google to find the list), buy it, then read and follow the wiki to try and rebuild.
Never pull any memory cards when data may be being written to it. This applies for all devices, not just raspberry pis.
