@Dochartaigh It has been a recurring issue. However I think a few have been from people simply baffled by the CLI. My first advice is always "type emulationstation"...

@rbaker I remeber seeing maybe here or reddit someone saying they just installed an older image then updated it and it fixed it for them. Is it possible the latest image has an issue that isn't happening for everyone but is there nontheless?

I agree it's common. But I think it's definitely two separate issues. The more common is RetroPie launching to terminal on purpose (which with a quick setting fix can be turned off and work normally....or have them use the correct image is another common culprit I think ;)

The second, and way more crippling issue is RetroPie/EmulationStation crashing to terminal every time, then having no keyboard work, and being left with only SSH access...(and in my particular case no deal of apt-get/update/upgrade, no amount of "[re]install from source/binary" with the packages will bring the device back to life - simply have to reformat and start from scratch again, sadly).

@zinox2099 If the card appears smaller than it is this is because Windows cannot see the Ext4 partiton. Only the FAT32 boot partition of around 60MB. You need to reformat the card using SD Formatter and set "resize" option to on. Don't use windows built in card formatting tool.

@columboscoat Then use WinDisk imager to write the RetroPie image to the card. This image is a complete image in the correct format.

@zinox2099 use full, just to be sure. Not really required but best practice to use full.
