How to Guide for Cleaning Up ROMs

Hello all. Fairly new to using emulation software. Setup RetroPie this weekend on a Raspberry Pi 3. Everything seems to be in good working order. Using a 0.78 romset for lr-mame2003.
Is there a step by step guide out there to help clean up the rom list and get it down from 4000+ to something more manageable? Getting rid of clones and other unecessary roms?

@soonerdoc You can use a "lite" dat. See here:
