Error Creating SDL Window
-
I can't get RetroPie to run when I type emulationstation at the command prompt. I get an error similar to [https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/2028/error-creating-sdl-window](link url), but slightly different (see my details below). I ran sudo rpi-update to flash the firmware to the latest version. I still have the problem (and it seems like my internet is slower, but it is hard to tell because Chromium already wasn't terribly fast).
Pi Model or other hardware: B
Power Supply used: CanaKit 2.5A Power Supply E471380 3KZS
RetroPie Version Used: 4.1.11
Built From: Followed instructions here for installing on top of Raspbian Jessie [https://github.com/retropie/retropie-setup/wiki/manual-installation](link url)
USB Devices connected: Wireless mouse and keyboard (one wireless adapter for both)
Controller used: didn't get this far, but I have an Xbox equivalent
Error messages received:
lvl0: Error creating SDL window!
Could not get EGL display
lvl0: Renderer failed to initialize!
lvl0: Window failed to initialize!Log found in /dev/shm/runcommand.log (if relevant): No log
Guide used: (see BuiltFrom:)
File: NA
Emulator: NA
Attachment of config files: Not sure what I need to attach here (noob) -
@themazingness read the guide you linked again. The answer is there.

The relevant information is
The RetroPie SD image is built on top of Raspbian lite (Raspbian without the PIXEL desktop environment) RetroPie can also be installed on top of the full Raspbian but you can't run Retropie and PIXEL at the same time, you will need to logout of the PIXEL desktop environment in order to run emulationstation and the emulators RetroPie installs.
You may do better with a premade image though - and then install the desktop from there.

facepalm that must be it. I read it and forgot immediately. And of course when I went back to troubleshoot I only read through the step-by-step stuff.
Okay, so excuse my noob ignorance, but how do I "logout of the PIXEL desktop environment" so I can use the terminal only?
