I recently updated my installation from 3.8 to 4.1 which seems to include Advmame 3.1 (and older versions as well.) When I tried to use it, I found that it would fairly reliably hang on exit with messages from the vcgencmd command about VHCI issues. I was hoping to use 3.1 for some of the other Pi features and fixes since 1.4.

After taking it up with the developer, there is a now a beta version available (beta.advancemame.it, rc53 version) which clears this up and seems to work much better. Hopefully they'll release it formally in a 3.2 before too much longer, so that it can be included in the Retropie distribution. In case any of you were experiencing similar problems, you can install the beta from its .deb package, and move the binaries from /usr/local/bin to /opt/retropie/emulators/advmame/3.1/bin manually.

@andrewsi Can you share your thoughts about Advmame 3.1 on the pi? I use 1.4 almost exclusively for vector games since an update by @BuZz enabled vector to render at a specified resolution (allowing you to set it to your native display instead using a 640x480 default). Id also like more control on the Pi over the aspect ratio of some games. Anyway, what benefits are you getting by using the newer version?

Thanks for joining here. . . I have read a bunch of your posts on other forums and found answers to a lot of questions I had when I was using other SD card images with AdvanceMAME.

@caver01 Happy if any of my other posts were able to help you out. :-) Anyhow, I just got started with 3.1, but at minimum the on-screen menus don't flicker like mad in certain screen modes anymore. I get the sense that the Pi-specific code in Advance is now able to automatically make use of GPU-based scaling in most cases. I suspect that may help performance in some of the more complex ROMs, but I do like keeping up to date as a general rule.
