Completely lost- noob warning!

Firstly apologies for the complete noobness. I've had a read through the FAQs and done a search but I only got my pi zero w yesterday and I have limited Linux knowledge (despite being a long term user of Ubuntu and mint) basically I tried using the image from retropie which then wouldn't boot from the SD card. So I reinstalled rasbian and then used a tutorial for a script that said it would install retropie on top of rasbian. I can now load up emulation station and assign keys to my gamepad. However I've put roms on the SD card but I still just get the configuration option when I boot the RPI. Am i doing something blazingly obvious wrong? If so I apologise in advance and thank you for your patience!

@dansharpy If you are as lost as you say you are, it could be just about anything, so to rule out a lot of possibilities, you need to provide more detail. Click that link at the top of this page and follow the advice. For example, what emulator are you trying to run? Where exactly did you put the roms? Can you give an example?
Also, as you figured out, it can take a little time to ensure the image is 100% compatible with the Pi Zero W. There are other threads on the subject that you should have found easily. <EDIT> Looks like progress has already been made!<EDIT>Starting from scratch and loading via the script was a good idea, and gives us some of the requested background info, but we need more specifics about what you are trying to run.

Thanks for the reply! ive downloaded a mario kart 64 rom so once id run the install script for emulation station i then shutdown the pi and removed the sd card. i put it in a sd card reader and put it back in my ubuntu laptop where id downloaded the rom and copied it over to the /retropie/roms/n64/ folder. Ive a very basic knowledge of emulators so left the rom as a zip file (im assuming this is correct?) then i ejected the sd card reader, put the sd card back into the pi and booted it back up. it gets to a command line where i type 'emulationstation' which loads me into the retropie gui. However all i get is the configuration options which leads me to think its not recognising the rom in the n64 folder. Dont really know where ive gone wrong but i hope thats a bit more detail! The retropie gui interface loads up fine so im assuming the image and how its been put on the sd card is correct. Thanks in advance for your help!

@dansharpy In this case you need to unzip. See here for compatible file extensions. https://github.com/retropie/retropie-setup/wiki/Nintendo-64

What was the extension of the rom file you uploaded to your Pi? Open it and see if there are more files in it.
