@leeskinner126 can you please provide more information? Did you follow setup instructions? Did you first set up a keyboard? Did you set up a controller? What type of controller. What menu were you in when you caused the issue?

@leeskinner126 first off, I am not sure why your R1 would be set up to bring up a menu? Regardless, use your keyboard and press the button you set up as the start button. Choose to configure a controller and reset up your PS4 controller. See if that works.

It'll help draw in more possibilities if you can provide the information requested at https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first

@leeskinner126 I agree with @mediamogul, it is hard to figure out what your issue is with the information you are providing. Do you know how to get into your system through either an ftp like winscp or can you get in by ssh? If you can do that, you can get to the controller input file. I don't have access to my pi right now, but i believe the location for the file is: /opt/retropie/configs/all/emulationstation/es_input.cfg

If you could access that, you can then see what buttons are mapped where and modify them. You could also delete that file and then reboot and reset up your keyboard and controller. I would recommend that you spend some time in the Docs section of this site as well as the information on github
