@ruckage said in Cardboard Mini NES + Nes mini and Famicom mini themes:

    Pi Model (1, 2, 3, or zero)
    I have 3b
    Power supply used (give details)
    I have a 5v / 2.5vA "lovepi" supply
    Model APL-WA 050250A
    Imput 100-240VAC 50/60hz
RetroPie version used (did you use the image provided on the retropie site?)
Yes, I used the image provided on the site RetroPie 4.2
Then updated the RetroPie setup script which brought me to 4.2.18
The exact steps you took in order to update EmulationStation.
Initially I tried to update it through Emulation Station by going into the RetroPie setup and then managing packages in Core packages. I am sure that this is likely my problem. I am very new to Linux and I have never done a day of programming prior to this. Setting up my BIOS was difficult...trying to learn something new has been a slow curve for this ol' dog.
    Were any errors displayed?
    No
What exactly happened when it failed.
After 3 days of waiting for it to rebuild, not sure what happened but it shut off at around package #75. I do not remember which package that it is however.
This happened twice at the same spot.
Did you actually leave it long enough in order to build from source (this takes time)?
I think so. Three days seemed far generous, is it possible that it could take longer?
Did you restart the system after the update was complete.
Well, yes...the system was no longer on. Once it was re powered, I did restart the system correctly.

Thank you @ruckage for your time. Also thank you for your love for this theme. I am always surprised by the amazing theme ideas people come up with; but this was a master's stroke of brilliance.

    In your debt, Hankola.

No, it shouldn't take that long. On a pi 3 I've never really timed it but i'm sure it's under an hour to build from source.

Updating through retropie setup is fine and should work perfectly.

Just to be sure these are the steps you should be taking:

      Retropie Setup
      Manage Packages
      Manage Core Package
      EmulationStation
      Update From Source

If it still doesn't work I would try and rule out things such as the power supply or SD card being the problem. I've not heard of that power supply but I know a lot of third party supplies aren't up to the job. Buy an official raspberry pi power supply as they are reliable and aren't expensive. Also try a different SD card just in case, make sure it's a good brand - I use sandisk ultra as they are fast and don't cost much.

Is the pi in a case? If so it may be worth to try removing it from the case to rule out overheating being an issue - building from source is cpu intensive so will generate a lot of heat on a pi 3.

Have you fitted a heatsink? If so are you sure that it used thermal tape and not just regular tape as that would cause even higher temperatures.

@ruckage @Hankola it appears that you are stalling out during updating from source. This is a known issue now that a lot more features have been added to Emulationstation. For most users there isn't really a reason to need to update from source. The retropie team has been doing a great job of updating the binary very quickly. You should be able to update emulationstation from binary and get everything you need.

If you have to update from source you must exit emulationstation and update from the command line. Even then you may stall during the update process. Please try to update from binary and see if that works.

Thank you both. I will attempt binary first. The wiping and reflashing has me gun shy.

Edit- this works and no set up required! The themes both look amazing! Only one black spot for me! Live-able!!!
            Cheers!

@ruckage could you make a theme based on this nice UI?

I don't think @ruckage can do that yet, although I can't speak for himself personally, but he would need the assets for the SNES Classic Edition. Since it is not released yet, he doesn't have access to them. You should probably wait until sometime after September 29th.

Oh, exciting. I've been waiting to see that. I can can probably make a start (I want it for my own super famicom build :) ), the main selection screen is pretty much the same layout as the nes classic (as I expected) and I actually drew all the assets for the nes theme based on screenshots. I'll probably make a start today - it can always be changed later if needed.

I'm not sure if the parts of the video showcasing the games themselves with a preview video and boxart is also part of the UI though or if it is just for the trailer. If it's for the ui I have to say those screens are a bit dull.

Yeah, thanks - i wasn't aware that they had shown the UI . It's not clear enough to work from unfortunately as it's pretty blurry but after lots of trawling through various youtube videos I've been able to make a start. I'll post some wip screenshots shortly.

so now with you working on both ruckage do you plan to add collection support to your theme at least default custom one if not individual themes? now that it is in official build of retropie.

Yes, I think I already said a week or so ago that I would be adding collection support. I need to look into it more though and decide on the best way to do it.

@ruckage thanks, I am glad I gave you at least one tool for you to work :) sadly right now I am using Recalbox due to its stability and easy access to its settings (that is its selling point for me) easy updates easy screenshots and easy rewind / fast forward easy and intuitive favourites system and its easier access to Kodi ( tho I hate the fact that they swapped the function of the A and B buttons and that they separate Cave story and Doom, games wich should be in ports are separate systems) but even on a rival platform I still love RetroPie and I am watching its progress closely to the point that I still comment on this forum and the first theme maker in wich I inmediatly thought to start working on this theme was you, when I saw the UI in the video I screamed and say "I must be the first person to show ruckage the UI" greetings from México

Ps: to be fair and honest I love both systems, one because of its super nice active and open comunity and its fast updates and the other because of its stability easy and nice UX (user experience) and ease to install thanks to Noobs, but even so, I am not here to debate wich is better, I am here to talk with yoy amazing comunity and help you ruckage to start building that theme

As I said even on another OS (I got there because my gamelists got corrupt because of suden shutdowns and then accidentally I messed up my system even more deleting the gamelist files) I am glad to help RetroPie, keep the good work

@ruckage Is the UI still 8 bit? or did they bump it up to 16-bit?

It has more of a 16bit look to it (same resolution but uses more colours) which makes sense as it's for a 16bit system. I nearly have a preview ready to show so you'll be able to see.

This took longer than I thought but after many hours of work I can show some previews of the Super Famicom/Snes Classic theme. It may change before I release it but this gives you an idea of how it will look. I based it on what screenshots I could get from youtube videos, it's not an exact copy but as with the nes mini theme that isn't my intention. I've adapted it to suit a base resolution of 480x270 (this scales evenly to 1080p) and have adjusted the border art to fit the existing logos I've made for the nes mini theme. I'm working on the US SNES border now so will post previews of that next.

                                          0_1503436822211_snes classic carousel preview.jpg

I think I'll probably start a new topic for this, I'll post a link to it when I start it.
