      @Hex

Ok so i replaced the sound card.

Then chose alsa:hw:1,0 as the chip is listed there
      Then chose Master.
      Still no sound.

      Then increased the volume.
      Still no sound.

      Rebooted.

Volume reset to 0 by itself.
      Increased the volume again.
      Still no sound.

if i set the volume and exit the menu and return it sets it back to 0

Sound volume drops to 0 the moment Speaker or Master is selected.
PCM does not drop it to 0

After googling online i see no one has provided this much info.
But no one has solved this ever.
Starting to lose hope on this one.

Can you do a clean format, choose Speaker and ALSA:HW:1,0
              That should get it working.

I would like to point out to you that if I have not replied you can edit your previous comment to include additional information. No need to create multiple posts. I am sometimes working on code and dont visit the site.

                Will i need to update?
Sorry keep forgetting about the edit function.

If i need to update. "because you need to update to see the sound options"
Then i have done this twice.
Both times had the same result.

@Xeon I am asking if you can do a clean format. As in wipe SD card and re write retropie image.

                    Ok each time.
I did do a proper format.

                    But lets do it again.
I will also do a fresh download and check the MD5 hash.

                    Formatted and partition wiped.

Boot your Rpi with usb sound card connected.

From ES select Speaker in volume control and ALSA:HW:1,0 as omx device. Close Settings menu. Open Settings menu again and verify that volume level is saved properly.

Thats all that is needed. Let me know if it works.

The only options in sound settings shown are:

                        System Volume
                        Enable Sounds
                        Back

                        Nothing else.

                        What next?
Btw this is really hard to see on crt or Video display had to wait for the display to dim to take this pic.

Thats not possible. What are you running this on ?

Edit : You are possibly running an older version of ES. Can you update from binary and check again. You should be running 2.5 and up to have this option.

@hex This is the un updated image as seen on the downloads page.
                            https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/releases/download/4.2/retropie-4.2-rpi1_zero.img.gz
                            I did no updates.

So should i only update ES?

From the constant reflashing... the card is now screwed.

                                  I think i'm done.
Will rather do a project that does not involve a Rpi board

But it seems the Rpi is literally going to stop me at every corner.
Not going to buy another memory card only to waste my life, weekend and money.

Parts replaced just getting sound to work.

Let me tell you a tale. While making my GameBoy Zero these are the things I had to replace

                                        • Pi zero
                                        • USB hub
                                        • Sound card

                                        • Gamepad

                                        Here is the album http://imgur.com/a/aQD0M

It works well now and it was worth it

                                          @hex I totally understand.
                                          Great build btw.

But i am utterly frustrated at how many weeks spent on this now just for sound.

i have not even added the motion tracking for quake yet.
i have not gotten to try start porting Xash3d.
                                          I am not having fun.
