Pi3b arcade kit - no sound, no controls (can't exit even with kb)
-
Here's what I have in retroarch.cfg:
input_enable_hotkey_btn is commented out
input_enable_hotkey = "escape"
input_exit_emulator = "escape"I guess audio does work I was just running some old roms I had with defective audio. Answering "what kind of controller?" I'm not sure what to say. The kit is from that URL I gave earlier, the parts are just labeled "zippy" so probably some chinese generics. On massdrop the buttons and joystick were said to be "arcade quality" which it isn't, unless it's some ghetto arcade I haven't been to. The rest of the kit is pretty nice and the pi3b is from element14.
Basically the controls are a joystick with 4 arcade buttons on top hooked up to the k1-k4 on greekpi usb board, 2 more buttons on top hooked up to the L2-R2 on the greekpi, two volume buttons on the side hooked up to the vol +/- on the greekpi, and two mini buttons on the front hooked up to SE (select) and ST (start) on the greekpi. I need to double check that controller config, but I've already done that a few times and none of the keys are working in any rom I've tried so far (using mame x.39, 1.xx, mame4all, etc).

@pfylip you need to contact the seller. It is obvious from the link you purchased a preconfigured installation. We have no idea what or how the seller configured retropie or any of the controls. You also have not provided any of the information required like what versions of retropie and emulationstation you are running. We also need to know how your arcade controls are recognized.
Prebuilt images are not supported on this site because of all of the above, and more. Please contact the seller or you can start over by reformatting your SD card and installing a fresh copy of retropie from this official site. Then you can follow all of the setup docs and use this forum as a resource to set up the machine just the way you want it.
Good luck

@tmntturtlguy The retropie is just the standard image from what I can see, nothing was pre-configured. The pi was new and standalone and the kit came with a microsd with the standard retropie image on it. Also I said the version of pi and retropie. Emulationstation version is 2.0.1a.

@edmaul69 I don't have a hotkey option at the bottom of controller config in emulation station. Also an atari rom worked using stella but I still couldn't exit, so the control issue with mame must be some config problem. The weird thing is the keyboard doesn't work though.
-
@tmntturtlguy sorry, this is the first time I used retropie and a raspberry pi so still figuring it out. I've used linux since the first slackware version in the 90s and migrated to windows later mostly for gaming and just recently started going back to linux so I'm still re-learning everything.
-
@pfylip regardless the image is way out of date and you'd do well to start with a fresh newer one. It may actually be simpler with all the recent changes. Plus you'll know how to set it back up again when it breaks.
If you can read you shouldn't have too much trouble with this guide:
-
@pfylip stella or lr-stella? If stella, you need you to go into its config setup with tab key to setup exit on a controller. Ctrl +q on a keyboard is how it is set up by default to exit. Lr-stella uses select + start on your controller.
-
@edmaul69 it was lr-stella. I took herb_fargus's advice and just installed a clean new retropie. Got it up and configured and all the atari2600 works fine now plus select+start to exit. Keyboard still doesn't work in lr-stella but it does work in mame now except I can't get the controller to exit a game yet, but at least now I have somewhere to start. Pretty stupid the default image they send with that kit doesn't even work with their controller out of the box. Thanks for the help everyone.

@pfylip open up /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch.cfg and remove the hashtags in front of all the player 1 keyboard controls and set them to the keys you want. If you want player 2 keyboard controls you have to create them in there.

I'm not sure what happened but in the middle of my effort to get all the roms I had at the correct version for lr-mame2003, the config files and most of the systems in es_systems.cfg disappeared and ES wasn't detecting anything but atari2600 and mame. So I updated all the packages and had to reinstall the packages for intellvision, atari800, lbalpha, etc, now everything seems to work great. I still need to configure the keys for intellivision (I guess that won't work with this arcade kit since it has so many keys) and get the joystick working in atari800 (for 5200). I thought the hardware of this kit would be the main DIY part of it, but I didn't expect retropie to be this difficult. Lots of searching and reading to figure out where everything is located and how to solve weird problems.
Anyway thanks for the help.

*ancient, unlicensed preloaded version of retropie ;)
anyway, good you're up and running!
