Why no torrent links?
-
I'm certain this has been asked many times, but why no torrent links?
Not everybody has entirely reliable Internet connections. I'm happy to host the files forever, if somebody just would publish them. I have a beefy Internet connection and a mean machine - not that I need that for hosting torrents.
Also, hashes can always be verified on this site. Right on the download links, I can see the verification.

I would like this too.

From here in the forums:
https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/4400/torrent-download-retropie
I found this link, which I'm downloading now:
http://s000.tinyupload.com/index.php?file_id=15034396308739280362
I've confirmed that at least retropie-4.2-rpi2_rpi3.img.gz and retropie-4.2-rpi1_zero.img.gz are both correct:
md5sum *.gz
c2e61be267d816b5ef252b5373ba104e retropie-4.2-rpi1_zero.img.gz
850983353170e45d43ff94266c64b4da retropie-4.2-rpi2_rpi3.img.gzAnd BTW: sha256sum retropie-4.2-rpi*.gz
b588eace278ba9e2a2d75b41edca2ebda325a50eb1ac3f4c9adf71ede0fd2fa2 retropie-4.2-rpi1_zero.img.gz
403fd0dd915e15abf3b7b9c93786722ce569645e62a4b76f2d1c5e6c31cd3a2e retropie-4.2-rpi2_rpi3.img.gzSo, if you need the link, there it is. I'll seed this forever, but it looks like plenty of people are.
Would be nice if they posted the torrent on the main page, as long as the images are correct.

I want this too
-
@hex Hey, just so you know, the link I originally gave you was for 4.0.2 - you want 4.2
@RetroFreak89 - you too, if you followed my torrent link.Sorry about that. 4.2 is fully seeded - 4.0.2 is not...
I modified the link to be the correct one.

That topic with the torrent link is listed in the "Useful topics/posts index". There are other useful topics in the list (as the name says :) ).
-
@meleu It would be nice if it there was an official link on the download pages, just to make it easier to find.

@BuZz any comments ?

Sorry, but really? If you google "Retropie Torrent", the first link that shows up is the thread, on this site, with the links. So it's not a super hidden secret. And why should @meleu even care to maintain the useful links thread, when this happens. This is exactly what I meant in a different thread, about things are not easy to find. And that IMO nobody wants to update informations when they are obviously ignored.
It's nothing personal, but I thought I was lazy when it comes to researching things. -
@ectoone If THIS page is the first link that shows up, let me remind you, I created this page.
Second, it depends on the search engine. Under Google for example, I get wildly different results at home than I do at work, because I have 2 different accounts under Google.
Third, I would say it's extremely minimal effort to place a link on the main page, and I simply don't understand why this isn't done.
Fourth, verification of the md5sum is still necessary, and it's not consolidated in one place, as it ought to be. I have seen Ubuntu produce the WRONG md5sum before, from their official link through bit torrent.
And finally, your argument that I'm being "lazy" is specious. There's a lot of people that would like to see this done, and there's no good reason for not doing it. This is trivial to do. Nobody should have to be going through forums to find out how to download this, or depending on 3rd parties to produce torrents. This is the only distribution I know of that makes it difficult to get a torrent file. What is the point of them loading their own servers?
-
First: It's the unofficial torrent link topic that showed up, not yours asking for one.
Second: Sorry again, but this sounds like you didn't spend more then 5 minutes to find a torrent before asking for one.
Third: I guess the main developers either can not or don't want to be responsible to make sure the torrent is always seeded.
Fourth: I'm not quite getting your point here. The md5 is on the download page and if you got the file from the unofficial torrent shouldn't you be able to compare them? I mean ok, that would require to download the file first, which could be a waste of time if the checksum is wrong in the end.
Finally: Nobody should expect to get the same service from any distribution/software, especially not when that product is free and made by some guys in their free time. In that case you should appreciate that 3rd parties provide extra support.
I don't understand what you mean with "loading their own servers". The webspace for the site is sponsored (and it sounds that it creates quite some expensive traffic already), the image downloads are hosted on github.
Contributions to the project are always appreciated, so if you would like to support us with a donation you can do so here.
