and if you hold a direction on the joystick ? Can you test with another controller ? it might be a hardware issue. I can't reproduce it here on either a keyboard or a usb gamepad. Also how did you skip configuration of start / select (which appear before A)

Also https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first (Helps if you provide more details)

Sorry, you're right, I could've provided a bit more info. I have a Logitech keyboard / mousepad combo (k400r) attached and two retrolink usb joysticks (atari clone type, one button joysticks). I'm running latest Ubuntu and ES is version 2.0.1a+r272~3~ubuntu16.04.1. I don't get any error messages.

Nothing happens when I hold directions either. The joysticks work ok in e.g. Vice with C64 games, when I tried that. The skipping doesn't work with my PSX gamepads either, otherwise adding controls / buttons works ok.

        Thanks!

Are you running RetroPie ? You are running RetroPie from a source install on a PC ? or ?

I'm actually not running RetroPie, I just did an emulationstation test install on my Kodi PC box to see how it works. Hope this is not totally wrong forum for this question.

You are welcome to ask, but this is actually a forum for RetroPie, so it would have been useful to make that clear in your post. The RetroPie Emulation Station has some customisations and also runs on a newer SDL2 than is available by default in Ubuntu (Actually, installing RetroPie from source on Ubuntu on a PC uses the system SDL, but the ES is still customised)

You can try installing RetroPie on your Ubuntu machine and see if that works any differently for you - https://github.com/retropie/retropie-setup/wiki/RetroPie-Ubuntu-16.04-LTS-x86-Flavor

Ah, I see :) .. I guess there's no way of installing RetroPie on a regular PC? Or just the customisations? I guess I could try to build the latest version from git if that would maybe fix the issue..

The post before yours. Perhaps you missed it because I added it after.

Thanks for the link. But I just realized, I guess I can only skip the 'page up' and 'page down' buttons, the 'b' button cannot be skipped. At least there's no 'hold any button to skip' message. Does this mean emulationstation cannot be used with my 1-button joysticks?

You can skip the B button or at least I was able to. However, you will need another input device to control Emulation Station properly (and to exit from RetroArch emulators). Eg a keyboard.

I was able to get past the controller config with the psx controller, so now I'm able to set the keyboard as the default, hopefully. I ran into some other issues and will test later to see if I can have the joystick plugged in and still use the keyboard. Thanks for the help!
