Hi guys, imagine you were to build an "essential" console list for ES so no important consoles and videogames are missing, what would you put in it?
Currently I have in my ES the following: Atari2600, Sega SMS, NES, Megadrive, NEOGEO, SNES, Turbografx-16. If I wanted to go no further than the 16-bit era, is there any glaring absence in that list?

I noticed the absence of GameBoy.

@meleu thanks! You're right, and what's more I noticed I didn't take any handhelds into account. The thing is, despite being an old fart, I don't have any firsthand experience with early console gaming because where I lived as a boy, 8-bit computers were all the rage: c64, spectrum and the like. So, I got to know all these machines just recently through emulation.
Added Gameboy to my todo list, any other handhelds worth checking out? I've read a little about sega game gear and at first glance most games semed to be SMS rehashes and the like.

If you like Street Fighter then I would add FBA. Not a console, but you do get the arcade perfect versions of Street Fighter II and III.

I also have the MSX emulator, but I mostly got that for Metal Gear.

For the Atari Lynx I still enjoy California Games from time to time. It's very different from other versions. The surfing mini game is still fun!

As for the Game Gear I believe the Sonic games are different from their console counterparts. Mostly you are better off with the Master System as the games display a bigger area.

For the most part, it already covers everything (and quite a bit more) for me.
However, I'm holding out for BBC emulation, I have a separate pi2 with riscos for just that, and only because that's what I grew up with. But I won't be holding my breath!!

I would definitely add Amiga, but haven't tried emulation myself. Seems like a bit of a hassle, unfortunately.

@andershp Amiga is quite easy actually. It works a little bit differently than other emulators, but that's all. It's a great system for Cannon Fodder and Lemmings (amongst others).

@svmariscal in my part of the world (Brazil) this is what was mainstream from 8 and 16 bits ages:

                  • Atari 2600
                  • Master System
                  • NES
                  • GameBoy
                  • Game Gear
                  • Mega Drive
                  • SNES
                  • (maybe Sega CD)

I measure this based on what I saw in the old video game magazines (from the 90s).

@bobharris but you cannot edit inputs, can you? So for many games you need a keyboard?

I don't include gameboy on my pi because I got spoiled by the gbpocket shader used on the pc version of retroarch. People have tried to make an overlay that sorta looks like it, but it doesn't look anywhere near as good.

Well, here in Europe I'd certainly have added the ZX Spectrum.

@pjft Then for Europe, also Vic20 and commodore64 should be added ;-)

I really don't understand why the ColecoVision is so often overlooked. It was a very powerful and capable system for its' time. And a direct inspiration for the Famicom. http://www.glitterberri.com/developer-interviews/how-the-famicom-was-born/deciding-on-the-specs/

                              ColecoVision needs more love.

@fruitybit there is another thread about the bbc micro and advmess. When i get home i am going to be setting it up to help him. Pay attention to that thread.
