Preferred way to NeoGeo?

@lostless neo geo romset rarely changes any. I wouldnt worry about the fba updates too much.

@andershp said in Preferred way to NeoGeo?:
how do you run NeoGeo games?
fba
Or do you update your NeoGeo games to new versions every time the fba gets updated?!
an fba romset doesn't invalidate the entire romset. i'm not sure i've ever updated the neogeo side.
Bonus question: since I'm utilizing the NeoGeo folder for my games, I'd love to keep it this way (would like to avoid all NeoGeos to get into the MAME or Arcade folder). Can this be done with MAME2003?

@dankcushions agreed. My neo geo romset i got somewhere between 2000 and 2005. I have no issues with them.
-
Thanks all, I guess I can safely update to 4.3 and if some of my NeoGeo games stops working agains expectations, I'll just update them one at a time.
-
@andershp If they don't work, big deal. The fba romset required is rather new and you can easily find it right now.
-
As far as I know Neo-Geo was emulated long ago. I ran them on my 400mhz with 128mb ram in 1999-2000 with out a problem. The only thing that has been added is just the updated uni-bios, The roms themselves have not
-
@akafox Yeah, I don't think the contents of the NEO-GEO ROM zips has been changed in a long time. The games are relatively new, very popular and of course released on the home AES system. Good dumps of these ROMs were obtained a long time ago and unlikely to be updated.
-
OK but why is it that the very old MAME games is in constant renewal then?
-
There are a plethora of neo-geo SNK cartridges..and them being removable means being "being safe" (stored) and no region lockout to speak of and easy to dump correctly the anti-piracy was not that hard to break either.
Compare that to a rom soldered to an arcade board that gets fried or "reworked" or battery leaks on the chips and kills it (can not believe they built it that way!) or an encrypted chip that can never be decrypted because the battery that kept the decrypt key alive has died..and thus the whole board is useless. (most cps2 games) or hard drive failures or tape drives or laserdiscs or CDs/DVDs even dead due to bit rot.
Some of the MAME DEVs actually rebuild the physical chip (rom) to be able to dump it. Some they are able to get parts of the code..then other times they find a better board or chip and are able to get a better dump of the info..so now we update and have a better (read complete) rom for mame.

Hope the thread is still being monitored. What about 0.2.97.42 FBA romset? I can't find it anywhere. Why hasn't someone created this? Or is what you are saying true, that you use the .39 romset and just go with it? I thought in .40 there were many roms added or fixed, no? Can't find that either. And I think I am confused because I am just looking for the neo-geo console set and the .39 roms seem to be just MAME Arcade roms. Still trying to figure out the difference there between the MAME zip and the FBA zip.
-
@flightrisk I dont think there is has been many, if any changes for a while for neo-geo roms. Most were good dumped many years ago. I'm using a very old mame2010 romset i got years ago, and will say most roms are working. Every once in a while, I'll get a game that has been updated and have to hunt for a newer rom of that game. As far as mame and FBA romsets, there is no difference. The current FBA romset is based off MAME 0.184 romset, just a smaller subset of it.

they have. it's pretty easy to find although that's all i'll say on the matter :)
neogeo roms have probably not changed since .39, though. why not try and see?

Just make a backup image and then you can freely try out updates. If it really breaks anything, then reapply the backup image to sd card and then you know it.

I have a set of roms that were in 5 parts. It came with about 200 roms and a folder called downloaded_images with artwork. The art is a screenshot with the box art in the lower left corner. How can I tell what version I have? The resolution is low, maybe 320x224. There was the arcade version, then the console (MVS vs. AES?) and then a pocket version. Am I right in assuming that MVS and AES are essentially the same? The arcade and home electronics were identical as far as running the exact same roms? Are samples needed for the NEO-GEO? Can the Selph scraper replace the static artwork with video snaps?
-
Made a separate post for my NeoGeo CLRMAMEPRO XML files.
If you scan your romsets with them and find that you are missing ROMs, as @dankcushions says, they're not hard to find :P
-
Are you talking about the artwork?
I doubt the artwork has a version.
The MVS and AES are the same thing yes
Most NEOGEO games do not need samples..
Yes the scraper will replace them..if set up correctly (look for arcade)
-
@akafox afaik not a single NeoGeo Game needs samples.

@stoo , excellent on your .DAT files. I just used the first one (no anything other than working non clone, non mahjong roms) and rand into the following. Maybe you can help or point me to replacing what I need to:
I get "unpacking error" in clrmamepro64 on these files:
kof2001.zip\262-c4-08-e0.cf
kof2002.zip\265-v2.v2
kof99.zip\252-c7.c7
rotd.zip\264-c6.c6The first file is not in the zip, there is a .c4, but not a .cf. Then next one the file is there. Maybe corrupt zips?
And my missing files are:
Bang Bang Busters 2010
crossed sword 2 bootleg cd
shoutetsu brikin'ger -iron clad prototype
the irritating maze / ultra denryu iraira bou
the king of fighters '99
last hope bootleg aes to mvs
rage of the dragons ngm
treasure of the caribbeanWhen I double click on these, some have only 1 file missing out of several, others have all red no files. Are there known good zips of these roms? If so, I maybe can try to find them individually? Perhaps these were roms updated since .39 and .42 is trying to find files inside the zips that don't exist or have the wrong hash?
-
Did I need to start with .42 roms? I believe these are .39, but I don't know how to tell. I could not find a a set of .42. Only older ones. I thought clrmampro converts older sets to any version. But if a set insn't complete, the rom itself changed and there is a new file in the zip or something else changes, then obviously, an old rom won't do.
