Cannot update Vice from Source - Retropie 4.3
-
Hello,
I successfully installed Vice from Binary on my new Retropie setup yesterday but when I then try to update from Source it whirrs away for an age only to fail.
Pi Model: 3 B
Power Supply: Official Raspberry Pi 5.1V 2.5A
Retropie version: 4.3
Built from: SD Image from Retropie website retropie-4.3-rpi2_rpi3.img.gz
USB devices connected: None
Controller used: "Snes" style USB GamepadError messages recieved:
"Could not successfully build vice - C64 emulator VICE (/home/pi/Retropie-Setup/tmp/build/vice/src/x64 not found)."
"Please see /home/pi/Retropie-Setup/logs/rps_2017-10-02_165545.log.gz for more in depth information regarding the errors."
My Retropie=Setup version is 4.3.1
Any ideas? Thanks

@ericlered post the referenced log via pastebin or similar. I would recommend to just use the last binary though.

Ok thanks, I'll have to ask a really dumb question now. Try as I might, and google as much as I can I don't know how or where to find the log files? Where is home/pi located?
This is my first Pi and literally all I have done is install the official Retropie image.
Any help much appreciated. Thanks
-
@ericlered It's the log file referenced in the error you posted first -
home/pi/Retropie-Setup/logs/rps_2017-10-02_165545.log.gz
. The file is compressed so try runninggunzip /home/pi/Retropie-Setup/logs/rps_2017-10-02_165545.log.gz
and the uncompressed file - which is a simple text file - should be placed at
home/pi/Retropie-Setup/logs/rps_2017-10-02_165545.log
(note the missinggz
extension).Note that if you ran the install from source several times, the log file might be named differently, so make sure it's the correct file.
BUT, as @BuZz said, try to do a binary install first for the emulator and see if it works, before attempting to install from source again.

Thanks Mitu
Yes I installed from Binary and seems to work fine, so no need to update.
As for finding the log files.... I don't even know how or where to access the home/pi/etc folders?
The only places I can think to look is in the Retropie menu, the Retropie-Setup options (where I installed the emu from) and on my SD card but I'm obviously not looking in the right places? Sorry if I sound stoopid haha. I guess I need to learn a lot and quickly!
Cheers

@ericlered Guess it's time to brush up on your Linux skill (or not, now that Vice is working:).
Accesing the files on the PI can be done via ssh or by starting the file manager from the RetroPie config menu and copying the file over an USB stick or other removable device.
But since you got it working, it's ok. -
Haha indeed, never used Linux before, thanks for the tip about the file manager.
