I use an Xbox 360 controller for retropie, and usually use the save and load hotkeys in the emulators. But for n64 it doesn't work. When I press select+x, I can't open the RGUI menu, select+rb/lb won't work. The only hotkey that works is select+start to exit.

@mrsebe that is because you are probably using mupen64plus as your emulator. This is not a libretro core and does not support the hot keys and menues. You can use lr-mupen64plus but it does not run as well.

          Hi guys,
I understand there's no libretro GUI access using mupen64plus core, but there's no way to save load states using mupen64plus?
In the official page of Nintendo 64 setup is written that "SELECT + L1 >> Load state" and "SELECT + R1 >> Save state" should work.
          Am I wrong?
Pressing "SELECT + R1" nothing happen and pressing "SELECT + L1" the emulator quit.

          Info about my configuration are:
          Pi Model 3
          RetroPie Version 4.3.2
Pre made SD Image on RetroPie website
          PSX3 controller

Save states and hotkeys are tricky in N64. They don't have that nice yellow text on the bottom of the screen telling you what is happening so I found they are really hard to use. Seems like it is saving but crashing on loading?

Anyways I was having the same problem and I followed the advice on this thread: https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3897/solved-pi3-retropie-4-0-2-some-n64-games-crash-when-trying-to-load-state-using-any-of-the-mupen64plus-video-plugins/7

So changing the audio setting in /opt/retropie/configs/all/autoconf.cfg
to "mupen64plus_audio=0" worked for me. Hopefully it works for you too! If not there's not much else I can help you with, unfortunately.

@parviglumis Thank you very much! It works.
One save slot and no yellow text is enough for me!

If i set "mupen64plus_audio=0", I no longer have any audio. Any ideas?
