Save states freeze when loading / saving

Hello, I use a Raspberry 3 with Retropie 4.2.
Lately, I’m not able to use save states anymore (memory card saves won’t work too). I can load a save state exactly once, after that no saving or loading will work. When saving, the yellow message in the corner says "saving" but stays at 0% – same with the loading function. To me, it looks like a problem with permission rights, but I don’t know how to fix it. Could anyone please help me?
This applies to PSX, GBA, Megadrive etc., so it is a general problem.

@cocojambo If it might be a permission problem, the try using the RetroPie setup to reset them - https://retropie.org.uk/docs/FAQ/#reset-ownershippermissions-of-homepiretropie-roms
