Windows XP - Winxp - Setup Guide

grab the Raspberry image, for winxp you will need, "HDDRawCopy1.10Portable", to write the img file to your Micro SD
.........................
you will need a usb keyboard and a pc game pad, I used a, Logitech PC Gamepad, it has the, "MODE" button, to switch the d-pad to the analog output...............similar pads will save you some trouble until you fine tone the controls (once you set up everything you won't need a keyboard anymore
.........................
After you configure the Control Pad, press F4 and run these commands in the command prompt screen:- sudo apt-get update
then - sudo apt-get upgrade
then - sudo reboot (sudo halt, will shut down the device)
.........................
https://howchoo.com/g/n2qyzdk5zdm/build-your-own-raspberry-pi-retro-gaming-rig
The above Guide is outdated, that is the current image file for the Micro SD will expand the partition automatically to fill usable space on the Micro SD, so you don't need to do that...................you will need to enable, FTP, so you can use a FTP Program like "FLASH FXP".
select "RASPI-CONFIG", then, "5. Interfacing Options Configure connections to peripherals", then select, "Enable/Disable remote command line access to our PI using SSH" ...............FTP will not be enabled (change password and hostme to "pi", forget what the default values were)
Next Changing Cores for Roms on a specific System, this example is for MEGA DRIVE (to play PIER SOLAR)
select "CONFIGURATION EDITOR", then, "Advanced Configurations", then, "Manually edit non RetroArch configurations", then, (press "page down" on keyboard to go down faster) you select:
-
"megadrive/emulators.cfg", then change the default value by typing from keyboard to, "default = "lr-genesis-plus-gx" (press "tab" on keyboard to go to "ok" option then press "enter" on keyboard)
-
do the same for, "mastersystem/emulators.cfg"
-
do the same for, "segacd/emulators.cfg"
..............................
PIER SOLAR also needs, "us_scd1_9210.bin", and
"bios_CD_U.bin" (which is "us_scd1_9210.bin" renamed) (if you can't find a sega bios package to just dump in the bios folder)
(You will ofcourse need, "Pier Solar.bin", and "Pier Solar.iso" in the rom, "mega drive" folder, via FTP from FLASH FTP or other program)
FINALLY (basic shader setting for a emulator "core", in this example SNES)
put the game in your rom snes folder, "snes.smc" or "snes.sfc", then restart the retropie, press start then select "quit" then "restart"............after reboot.............you should see the snes option.............once the game starts, bring up the "RETROARCH MENU", now select, "quick menu", then select, "Shaders", then select "Load Shader Preset", then select, "barrel-distortion_snes.glsp", now select, "Apply Changes"..................now change "Shader Passes" to "2", next make sure you see the following values:
Shader #0.............bsnes_gamma_ramp...
Shader #0 Filter.....Don't care
Shader #0 Scale....Don't care
Shader #1.............snes-hires-blend...
Shader #1 Filter.......Linear
Shader #1 Scale.......2xnow select "Apply Changes", now select "SAVE CORE PRESET", this will automatically start all your snes games under these settings............this works great for SNES and Sega Games, I couldn't Find a better combination for the classic pop out look of the snes...............this is for gameboy advance:
Shader #0.............bsnes_gamma_ramp...
Shader #0 Filter.....Don't care
Shader #0 Scale....Don't care
Shader #1.............retro-v2.glsl...
Shader #1 Filter.......Linear
Shader #1 Scale.......2xscroll down to "Shader #1" and select that option, then change the value to "retro-v2.glsl", then apply "SAVE CORE PRESET", once you have a gba game running to save the default option for all the gameboy advance games, for that core. (bring up the RETROARCH MENU in game, then you select "EXIT RETROARCH", and you will be back at the game selection screen, to choose another game, so you don't need to do anything complicated like create "playlists") (you can also resize the screen to "16x9" from the options, it will still look good, that is what I decided to use)
- sudo apt-get update
-
Configuring Gamepad to bring up the "RETROARCH MENU" once your inside a Game (so you can change the Shader Options, for a specific CORE (like snes only or gameboy advance only), and Other)
select "RETROARCH", from the main menu, then, "Settings", then, "Input", then, "Input Hotkey Binds", then, select "Enable Hotkeys" (and press the button you will have to hold down to enable hot key on your gamepad), then select, "Menu toggle" (and press the button that will bring up the menu).
You must hold down the "Enable Hotkey Button", and then press the "Menu Toggle Button", to bring up the "RETROARCH MENU" while playing a game/rom
Add another "Hot Key Button" to exit Retroarch so you can select the next rom without having to see the RETROARCH MENU
select, "Quit Retroarch", now press a button on your gamepad, then you will simply need to hold down the "Enable Hotkeys Button", and the "Quit Retroarch" button to quick the rom, and then this will bring you to the menu where you can select another rom/game.

The latest pre-made image of RetroPie is v4.3 – released on the 21th September 2017.(thats it, after you follow these steps, you'll have a better understanding, about getting the most out of your retropie for the games it does support...............it has better emulation of for a few systems versus the xbox1 and psp, and its on par with the pc emulators)

What is the purpose of this post?
-
Yeh @herb_fargus I was reading it and wondering the same thing. It's like he's read the official documents and then is regurgitating them here. Along with the added bonus of XP thrown in.
-
The Image Writing Software referenced in several places for the pre-made images of retropie, are not compatible with Windows XP.................however, HDDCOPY, is compatible with Windows XP................and FLASHXP is compatible with Windows XP and the Raspberry PI.
(inadvertently some materials are enforcing Microsoft Vista and above operating systems, and they are not necessary)
(another trend of behavior that is unfortunately, inadvertently implied, is that modified or translated roms are not compatible, and they all are...............that's the problem with "scrappers" that use CRC on official rom sets..................the total compatibility and recent updates to roms are ignored, you don't have to, or need to use any of the "scrappers"...............all of that language should be ignored)
-
@psalmsamuel That's not true - the Win32DiskImager (recommended for Windows systems) is also running on Windows XP, they put that on the front page:
For Windows XP/Vista, please use v0.9 (in the files archive).
-
I'm using windows xp, and that software will not work..............I'm probably missing a few vbscripts or whatever they are called, but we don't need to exclusively use that program, when there is a freeware alternative that nobody seems to remember.................(its the same software, "hddcopy", you can use with the img file to prepare a micro SD card for the henkaku hack on the psp vita).......................(some people will backup their files, install vista or above operating system, then install the program for retropie and then downgrade back to windows xp............sometimes you have to do that, but you don't need to in this instance)
-
@psalmsamuel I'm fairly sure though that you could've just condensed this whole thing into a link to the software with some qualifying text of "you can use this if you're using XP to burn the image to your Micro SD card". There was hardly any need for all the extra info as it is all in the official docs and up to date.

(RAY MABUS of Nostradamus, begins with the DEADLY HEAD WOUND JFK Assassination Anniversary, after the Women contends for the Presidency of the USA in the election process) (Super Valis 4 SNES, matching the Raspberry Pi's Logos)
Several references to manually editing the es_config file are not need also as you can simply go to the CONFIGURATION EDITOR, "Advanced Configuration", and, "Manually edit non Retroarch configurations", to change the default core when more than one core is referenced in the configuration selection boxes there
Manually editing the "es_config" file, requires FTP to perform the same function, so that much is not as clear as in one easy place at least for me...................more complicated setups, as the current guides reference, sure that would be the place in the the guide sections here, but, just for something simply along with clarity for WINDOWS XP, I believe this thread is worth a good look (especially for people wanting to have some issues made clear)
-
@herb_fargus did you understand the last post at all? I got lost around the JFK references...
-
(Super Valis 4 SNES, the scale and size of "RAY MABUS" is erroneously compared to the Energy Center Tetrahedron of Nibiru in our Sun and the Earths Moon, then it is revealed as a small micro tiny black hole, relating to the Higgs Boson, at the anniversary of the JFK's Assassination)
(Clearly the Official Guides do not explain the compatibility issue many uses of Windows XP are having, that includes other issues that are not made clear. So best to address them all..............with Windows XP and Flash FTP to connect to the Raspberry PI, you can do that with a 32 bit copy of Windows XP, because I believe the Raspberry is a 64 bit operating system)
(Plus if there are any other specific Windows XP issues, that should be resolved, because I specifically tested, what matters the official guides, may not reference with Windows XP) (For the benefit of users having the same issues)
-
I don't know why, but I get a feel this topic will be dwelve into more % mystic references vs. actual information.
@psalmsamuel while your intent may be good, your phrasing is awkward and the formatting even more. Besides the WinXP advice for imaging the RetroPie system, your post does not add more/better information than the official documentation. And to be honest, not a lot of people are using WinXP anymore. -
(The Official Guide https://retropie.org.uk/docs/First-Installation/ ............. references the image program that does not have the right routines for windows xp 32 or 64 bit, based, on a "SHGetKnownFolderPath" error for Shell32.dll, because of some changes made from Windows Vista Onwards https://sourceforge.net/p/win32diskimager/tickets/46/ .................... a lot of people are apparently having this issue, and the Official Guide of this program working with windows xp is something I could not get to work from my end ................ hopefully I've helped Windows XP users, having the same setup problems...............there may be a workaround, but I could not find it anywhere)
(The Raspberry does identify with the Blood Red Moons, which identifies with the Jupiter Alignment 9/23, and this identifies with the DEADLY HEAD WOULD, and RAY MABUS for the Seven Years of Revelation....................JERUSALEM or the Jew are then burried, because their lack of favor with God is the rebuke of Christianity, since they are not given what they want, but in terms of the Higgs Boson, that is Something RAY MABUS = BAR JESUS, the Book of Acts has already declared)
-
@psalmsamuel you are messing with powers you can't possibly comprehend

Lol

I don't want to encourage like behavior from other would-be new forum members, but this was fascinating. Reminded me of having a conversation with Mindscape's Racter on the Apple II (and other platforms)--like a computerized version of Mad Libs.
