Midnight Commander, other file managers, and alternate fonts?
-
Hello, all Pi(e) owners; after a week of tinkering with my new box (as a Linux noob), I believe I have it set up with almost everything done (even new systems successfully added to the ES), except for three minor things - perhaps someone here has dealt with any of them?

Is there a way to update the Midnight Commander? I update all on my Pi regularly, but the MC version installed is 4.8.13, while the one available on its official site is 4.8.19, with 4.8.20 coming soon. The reason isn't just updating to the new version, but the fact that I can't see the cursor at all in MC. Not in the command line, and not in the editor. It makes editing text files annoying, and I thought that perhaps the newer version would fix it.

Is there a way to install another file manager? Maybe Double Commander or the unofficial port of Far from https://github.com/elfmz/far2l ? Midnight is a good tool, but I'd really love to use Far.

Is there a way to install more fonts for the terminal and use them? The ones that are available are OK, but I would like to try others. (I like Terminus, which is much prettier than the default console font, and looks great at close up, but it starts looking blurry from distance).
Thanks in advance!

@marioncobretti Updating MC is done using apt/dpkg, as you probably noticed, and the version in Raspbian Jessie is unlikely to change. Looking over in the next release (Debian Stretch), I see that 4.8.18 is the version there, but you'll have to wait until RetroPie will work on Stretch.
What you're describing could be a configuration issue, maybe similar to https://askubuntu.com/questions/863850/why-is-caret-cursor-invisible-in-mcedit-in-xubuntu-16-04 ?About the fonts configuration - Terminus is already available in the RetroPie Raspbian install, there is even a configuration module for that: https://retropie.org.uk/docs/FAQ/#how-can-i-increase-the-console-font-size. If you want to install more fonts, then you should find the Debian package providing the fonts and then run (as specified in the docs)
sudo dpkg-reconfigure console-setup
to choose the fonts. -
Thanks, I'm trying out the fonts.
By the way, for anyone missing the cursor in MC: in my case, exiting EmuStation and running "mc" from the terminal makes the cursor visible. Perhaps it's ES that hides it.
