@ade forget the youtube vidoes, just follow the official docs: https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Running-ROMs-from-a-USB-drive/

the 'automatic mount' is the easiest way. what steps don't work for you? please detail exactly what you've tried and what happens.

@ade Start by giving more details - https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first. What games are you trying on and what does can't get the game roms to work mean ?

Check the docs for transferring ROMs https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Transferring-Roms/ and https://retropie.org.uk/docs/First-Installation/#transferring-roms

          Sorry guys and thanks!
I went straight to the official guide first. I tried to use the automatic mount method but when I tried to update the setup script but it won't. Just says update failed.

I followed all the other instructions on there fine . But when I put the usb stick back into my laptop it won't let me copy anything into the roms folder. It's as if it locks the usb I can't put anything onto it at all. I can open it, see all the folders like normal.
          Thanks again guys.

hmm, that's strange. i think you should fill out https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first so we can help sort that out, as that part is fundamental. also is your pi connected to the internet?

@ade I used an alternative method, where I installed Ubuntu as a second boot option on my PC, so it can read and write to the EXT4 partitions, then I just copy/pasted the roms into their corresponding folders. It worked for me, though some would consider this to be unnecessarily complicated I find it easier to manage.

@megatimx Everyone should dual boot their PC with a flavour of Linux. Especially if you are using Pis, you'll learn a lot that is obviously transferable between the two.

Well, thank you so, so much everyone !!!!! 😀
I've just got it working and am in for a really late night.
I have used a different memory stick to put the roms on. This is the fourth one I've tried and everything's working fine. My next thing will be to connect my 2tb sata drive to it now that I know it work's. Can anyone recommend a programme to format it two fat 32?
                  Thanks again peeps!!

You couldn't fill it up even if you downloaded every PSX and N64 game ever made. But I suppose you could add three seasons of Rick and Morty in there.
