Hi Score mame2003 problems

I have been trying to get the hiscore to work on galaga . I have downloaded the pre 0174 version of hiscore.dat and still cant get the hiscore to save. I have tried putting hiscore.dat in both the bios/mame2003 folder and also in roms/arcade/mame2003 . I have noticed though that in roms/arcade/mame2003/hi there is no galaga.hi . Is this the problem and if so how do I create galaga.hi ?
