No, it's not a requirement.

@cash513 no you don't. I'd recommend reading the documents and getting you head around the first install guide which should help you to understand the basics. Every question you have on initial setup is there.

So I followed the steps from the beginner's guide that but I still having the same issue where I cant find the retropie image file ....

@cash513 How did you unpack the .gz file ? There should be an .img file next to it - like in the video from the documentation
at around 04:00. -

I've just downloaded etcher and test installed it, which wasn't quick to start but did eventually and very simple to select the retropie image I also just downloaded to test the installation
I'm guessing it has to unpack a gzip thats 600MB first then copy that to the SD card. The image is 2GB unpacked so won't be quick by any means. Even with a fast SD card a 2GB file copy is going to take some time
If etcher doesn't give any indication of progress it will seem even slower. Try again but this time walk away and come back after 10 minutes. It should have finished by then
Also, have you a genuine SD card. There are a lot of bargain SD cards that are actually faulty to start with and sold as much bigger capacity but are useless. I've always stuck by either Samsung or Kingston memory SD cards with no issues, and make sure they are genuine not rebadged rubbish sold very cheap for a reason

@steptoe I tried it etcher and its been half hour and nothing has happened. I am using a Kingston sd card... Why does it say "Ths disc image file is corrupt" when I double-click the retropie image?

You probably have a program installed that reads .img files, but it doesn't understand the format of the RetroPie image file. Most likely it tries to read it as a CDROM/DVD image, but obviously that's not going to work.

@cash513 The image is to stretched to recognize the program that gives you this error. However, it seems the file is an .img file and this is the file that you can use with Win32DiskImager.
Start Win32DiskImager, choose your sd card partition and then browse to the folder where this file is stored and choose this file to be written to the sd card.
